Bilateral internal carotid artery dissection is a rare event associated with pregnancy, especially in a patient without any predisposing risk factors.A 34-year-old woman presented with postpartum unilateral weakness, headaches, and blurry vision 14 days after vaginal delivery. Radiologic imaging revealed bilateral cervical internal carotid artery dissections and cerebral infarctions. She was treated with anticoagulation and showed radiographic and clinical improvement. The pathophysiology of cervical ...

Chemokines are a large family of small cytokines and generally have low molecular weight ranging from 7 to 15kDa. Chemokines and their receptors are able to control the migration and residence of all immune cells. Some chemokines are considered pro-inflammatory, and their release can be induced during an immune response at a site of infection, while others are considered homeostatic and are involved in controlling of cells migration during tissue development or maintenance. The physiologic importance ...

The Nomenclature Committee for Factors of the HLA System of the World Health Organization standardizes the nomenclature of the HLA system and meets regularly during the International Histocompatibility Workshops. During the 15th International Histocompatibility Workshop in Buzios (RJ), Brazil, in September 2008, there was a meeting of the nomenclature committee when new rules were established, which were implemented in April 2010.

We present a systematic theoretical analysis of the motion of a pair of straight counter-rotating vortex lines within a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate. We introduce the dynamical equations of motion, identify the associated conserved quantities, and illustrate the integrability of the ensuing dynamics. The system possesses a stationary equilibrium as a special case in a class of exact solutions that consist of rotating guiding-center equilibria about which the vortex lines execute periodic motion; ...

We classify all generalized symmetries of the vacuum Einstein equations in four spacetime dimensions. They consist of constant scalings of the metric, and of the infinitesimal action of generalized spacetime diffeomorphisms. Our results rule out a large class of possible ``observables'' for the gravitational field, and suggest that the vacuum Einstein equations are not integrable.

We report a newly observed phenomenon, namely, the observation of a visible anomaly in the Bloch T(3/2) law for the temperature dependence of magnetization of nanostructured ferromagnets, for which we give a thermodynamic explanation. Our interpretation extends the Bloch law by introducing the system's chemical potential and assumes a finite Bose-Einstein condensation temperature T(BE) of the magnons. Our extension involves accounting for the possibility of a magnon or magnetic entropy term, leading ...

Motivated by recent experiments studyingthe dynamics ofconfigurations bearing a small number of vortices inatomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), weillustrate that such systems can be accurately described byordinary differential equations (ODEs) incorporating the precessionand interaction dynamics ofvortices inharmonic traps. This dynamics is tackled in detail at the ODE level, both forthe simpler case of equal charge vortices, and for the more complicated(yet also experimentally relevant) case of ...

We consider a 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) which describes the mean field dynamics of an elongated Bose–Einstein condensate and prove the existence of modulated amplitude waves with non-trivial phase and minimal spatial period tending to infinite. The proof combines the theory of local continuation of non-degenerate periodic solutions with a property of the Ermakov–Pinney equation.

A quantized vortex dipole is the simplest vortex molecule, comprising two countercirculating vortex lines in a superfluid. Although vortex dipoles are endemic in two-dimensional superfluids, the precise details of their dynamics have remained largely unexplored. We present here several striking observations of vortex dipoles in dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates, and develop a vortex-particle model that generates vortex line trajectories that are in good agreement with the experimental data. Interestingly, ...

G. F. Torres del Castillo,

Expressions for the complete perturbations of solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations and of the Einstein-Weyl equations in terms of potentials are derived, starting from decoupled sets of equations and using Wald's method (1979) of adjoint operators. The background electromagnetic field is required to be non-null with one of its principal null directions being geodetic and shear free and with an analogous requirement on the background neutrino field in the case of the Einstein-Weyl equations.

G. F. Torres del Castillo,

The equations for the spin- (3)/(2) perturbations of the solutions of the Einstein–Maxwell equations given by the linearized O(2) extended supergravity are considered. It is shown that for each geodetic and shear-free principal null direction of the background electromagnetic field there exists a gauge-invariant quantity made out of the spin- (3)/(2) field that satisfies a decoupled equation. In the case of type-D solutions with a nonsingular aligned electromagnetic field it is explicitly shown that ...

A local generalized symmetry of a system of differential equations is an infinitesimal transformation depending locally upon the fields and their derivatives which carries solutions to solutions. We classify all local generalized symmetries of the vacuum Einstein equations in four spacetime dimensions. To begin, we analyze symmetries that can be built from the metric, curvature, and covariant derivatives of the curvature to any order; these are called natural symmetries and are globally defined ...

Maurice A. de Gosson,

We show that the Schr\"{o}dinger equation in phase space proposed by Torres-Vega and Frederick is canonical in the sense that it is a natural consequence of the extended Weyl calculus obtained by letting the Heisenberg group act on functions (or half-densities) defined on phase space. This allows us, in passing, to solve rigorously the TF equation for all quadratic Hamiltonians.

Charles G Torre,

The Einstein equations with a cosmological constant, when restricted to Euclidean space-times with anti-self-dual Weyl tensor, can be replaced by a quadratic condition on the curvature of an SU(2) (spin) connection. As has been shown elsewhere, when the cosmological constant is positive and the space-time is compact, the moduli space of gauge-inequivalent solutions to this equation is discrete, i.e., zero dimensional; when the cosmological constant is negative, the dimension of the moduli space is ...

We study the dynamics of small vortex clusters with a few (2-4) corotating vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates by means of experiments, numerical computations, and theoretical analysis. All of these approaches corroborate the counterintuitive presence of a dynamical instability of symmetric vortex configurations. The instability arises as a pitchfork bifurcation at sufficiently large values of the vortex system angular momentum that induces the emergence and stabilization of asymmetric rotating ...

Starting from a particular metric of the Kerr–Schild form, we find solutions to the Einstein equations coupled to a Weyl field, to an electromagnetic field, to a nonlinear (Born–Infeld) electromagnetic field, to a Yang–Mills field, and to a cosmological constant. These solutions can be superposed to construct others with any combination of the sources considered.
