K(+) channels in mammary secretory (MS) cells are believed to play a role in transcellular electrolyte transport and thus determining ionic composition of the aqueous phase of milk. However, direct evidence for specific K(+) channel activity in native MS cells is lacking at the single-cell level. Here, we show for the first time that an inwardly rectifying K(+) (Kir) channel is functionally expressed in fully differentiated MS cells that were freshly isolated from the mammary gland of lactating mice. ...

The self-assembly of folate dendrimers into pi-stacked supramolecular rosettes is shown to produce ion channels in planar and spherical lipid bilayer membranes. The found ion channels are small, quite homogeneous, long-lived, ohmic, cation selective (Eisenman I), and blockable by the permeant cation.

Tsunami height survey was conducted immediately after the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake. Results of the survey show that the largest tsunami height was 4 m to the east of Cape Erimo, around Bansei-onsen, and locally at Mabiro. The results also show that the tsunami height distribution of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake is clearly different from that of the 1952 Tokachi-oki earthquake, suggesting the different source areas of the 1952 and 2003 Tokachioki earthquakes. Numerical simulation of tsunami ...

The authors describe the techniques employed in three patients with basilar artery aneurysms that were treated via the transoral transclival approach. To prevent the formation of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas and the risk of consequent meningitis, complete postoperative closure of the nasopharyngeal mucosa is essential. Long-term nasopharyngeal packing and continuous spinal drainage were found to be effective in these cases.

We report on new thermotropic liquid-crystalline oligo(amino acid) derivatives forming columnar structures. These are based on branched oligo(glutamic acid)s and 2-(3,4-dialkyloxyphenyl)ethyl moieties. An oligo(glutamic acid) derivative, alpha,gamma-bis(L-glutamoyl) L-glutamic acid tetra[2-(3,4-dioctadecyloxyphenyl)ethyl]ester, shows a hexagonal columnar phase, whilst a glutamic acid derivative, alpha,gamma-bis[2-(3,4-dioctadecyloxyphenyl)ethyl] L-glutamate, does not show a mesophase. Hydrogen bonds ...

The Cl- secretion via Ca2+-activated Cl- channel (CaCC) is critical for fluid secretion in exocrine glands like the salivary gland. Also in the mammary gland, it has been hypothesized that CaCC plays an important role in the secretion of Cl- and aqueous phase of milk. However, there has been no evidence for the functional expression of CaCC in native mammary secretory (MS) cells of lactating animals. We therefore assessed membrane current in MS cells that were freshly isolated from lactating mice ...

The colloid cyst of the third ventricle is a rare and unique tumor located in the anterior part of the third ventricle, just below the foramen of Monro. Since the lesion presents a great variety of signs and symptoms, the diagnosis is notoriously difficult if ventriculography or computed tomography is not performed. In the present article, one case is reported and 350 cases in previous publications are reviewed. A 45-year-old male developed a transient loss of consciousness followed by nausea and ...

Helical self-assembled columns form supramolecular chiral cubic and columnar liquid-crystalline phases (see picture). The complexation of hydrogen-bonded disks of folic acid derivatives that have oligo(glutamic acid) moieties and lipophilic alkyl chains with nonchiral ions leads to the self-assembly of chiral Pm3n cubic and hexagonal columnar structures.

An operative approach to aneurysms located at the lower half of the basilar artery or the vertebro-basilar junction is difficult. The transoral transclival approach, developed by Sano et al., seems to be reasonable, but it has been used in only a few cases. The most serious problem with this approach lies in high incidence of postoperative complications involving formation of a CSF fistula communicating with the nasopharyngeal cavity and the consequent meningitis. This approach was used in three ...

Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a plasma protein involved in retinol transportation, and recent evidence in rodents suggests that RBP4 is also a metabolic regulator that modifies insulin sensitivity. To assess how RBP4 levels are regulated in ruminants, we determined the RBP4 concentrations in bovine plasma and milk using Western blot analysis. Plasma RBP4 levels in non-pregnant non-lactating (control) cows were around 45 μg/ml, which were sustained during 60-h fasting, but decreased significantly ...

B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels have been shown to be elevated in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF); however, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Earlier, we reported that an increase in the augmentation index (AI), which is an index of wave reflection and arterial stiffness, is associated with PAF. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the BNP level and AI in patients with PAF. We enrolled 92 patients with a history of PAF and 90 age- ...

ADAMTS1 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 1) is an early immediate gene. We have previously reported that ADAMTS1 was strongly induced by hypoxia. Abstract Two adult patients with unilateral chronic subdural hematomas are reported because of the presence of dilatation of the lateral ventricle opposite the hematoma. In both cases, dilatation was limited to the contralateral atrium and the occipital and temporal horns. The selective dilatation, we believe, is explained on the basis of the anatomy of the skull base and the falx. This phenomenon may contribute to an increase of the supratentorial pressure, originally elevated by the hematoma. ...

In previous studies on the mechanism underlying megakaryocyte-specific gene expression, several ETS motifs were found in each megakaryocyte-specific gene promoter. Although these studies suggested that several ETS family proteins regulate megakaryocyte-specific gene expression, only a few ETS family proteins have been identified. Platelet factor 4 (PF4) is a megakaryocyte-specific gene and its promoter includes multiple ETS motifs. We had previously shown that ETS-1 binds to an ETS motif in the PF4 ...

Several lines of evidence suggest that atrial fibrillation (AF) may be a consequence of vascular disease. We investigated the relationship between cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), a new index of arterial stiffness, and the presence of paroxysmal AF (PAF).181 outpatients (91 patients with PAF and 90 age- and gender-matched subjects without PAF) were analysed for their sinus rhythm. This study aimed to determine whether the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), based on the blood pressure-independent stiffness parameter β and reflecting arterial stiffness from the origin of the ascending aorta, is a good predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease risk ...
