We investigated the initial photooxidation mechanism leading to reactive radical formation of polythiophene derivatives by focusing on the differences in the photochemical behaviors of photounstable poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and photostable poly(3-octyloxythiophene) (P3OOT). Electron spin resonance measurements revealed that the [P3HT]+· (formed by oxygen doping) decayed, whereas no change was observed in the photostable [P3OOT]+· after light irradiation. Furthermore, the absorption decrease of the [ ...

The photooxidation of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) has previously been investigated and it is known that the sulfur atom of the thiophene ring is oxidized into sulfur oxides by a hydroxyl radical that arises through hydrogen abstraction at the hexyl side chain at the α-position. In this study, in order to further investigate the photooxidation mechanism of the polymer, the side chain at α-position was varied and three different polythiophene derivatives with phenyl (P3PhT), tert-pentyl (P3DMPT), and ...

Abstract To thrive in the acidic vaginal tract, Candida glabrata has to cope with high concentrations of acetic acid. The mechanisms underlying C. glabrata tolerance to acetic acid at low pH remain largely uncharacterized. In this work, the essential role of the CgHaa1 transcription factor (encoded by ORF CAGL0L09339g) in the response and tolerance of C. glabrata to acetic acid is demonstrated. Transcriptomic analysis showed that CgHaa1 regulates, directly or indirectly, the expression of about 75% ...

Summary During disseminated infection by the opportunistic pathogen C andida glabrata , uptake of sterols such as serum cholesterol may play a significant role during pathogenesis. The ATP ‐binding cassette transporter A us1p is thought to function as a sterol importer and in this study, we show that uptake of exogenous sterols occurred under anaerobic conditions in wild‐type cells of C . glabrata but not in AUS 1 ‐deleted mutant ( aus1 Δ) cells. In aerobic cultures, growth inhibition by fluconazole was ...

Zn[2]-Cys[6] binuclear transcription factors Upc2p and Ecm22p regulate the expression of genes involved in ergosterol biosynthesis and exogenous sterol uptake in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We identified two UPC2/ECM22 homologues in the pathogenic fungus Candida glabrata which we designated CgUPC2A and CgUPC2B. The contribution of these two genes to sterol homeostasis was investigated. Cells that lack CgUPC2A (upc2AΔ) exhibited enhanced susceptibility to the sterol biosynthesis inhibitors, fluconazole ...

Farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) is utilized for many cellular processes, including the production of dolichols, ubiquinone (CoQ), sterols, farnesylated heme A and prenylated proteins. This lipid synthesized by FPP synthetase (ERG20) becomes attached to target proteins by the prenyltransferases, CDC43/RAM2 and RAM1/RAM2 complexes after the formation of the C15 and C20 units, respectively. Defects in protein prenylation as a result of inhibiting these enzyme complexes lead to pleiotropic effects in all ...

The uptake of endogenous sterol from serum may allow Candida glabrata to survive azole treatment. This study aims to determine the contribution of a sterol transporter that alters fluconazole sensitivity in the presence of serum. Bioinformatic analysis predicted CgAUS1 as the C. glabrata orthologue of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae transporters AUS1 and PDR11. To investigate whether the CgAUS1 gene has sterol transporter activity, we investigated the effects of an AUS1 deletion on the growth of a ...

Quorum sensing through farnesol, a quorum sensing molecule, regulates virulence and morphogenesis in Candida albicans. Farnesol and high cell density of C. albicans repress hyphal formation in a minimal medium containing N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Global transcription profiling at an early stage of quorum sensing by C. albicans in the N-acetyl-D-glucosamine medium was analyzed. Twenty-two of a total of 53 genes responded to both farnesol and high cell density. From in silico analysis and previous published ...

Whole-genome shotgun sequencing was carried out at Stanford University where the sequences were assembled into 412 contigs. C. albicans is a diploid basically, and analysis of the sequence is complicated due to repeated sequences and to sequence polymorphism between homologous chromosomes. Chromosome 7 is 1 Mb in size and the best characterized of the 8 chromosomes in C. albicans. We assigned 16 of the contigs, ranging ...

Cubic phase boron nitride (c-BN) film grown on intrinsic BN interlayer has been found to peel off near the interface. The strain force induced by the compressive c-BN film is suggested to extend the lattice spacing between the h-BN/t-BN (0002) planes, increase the lattice mismatch between BN phases and lead to the peeling of c-BN. Based on this concept, a new BN buffer layer enhancing c-BN adhesion has been grown. This buffer is almost stoichiometric in composition, tensile in stress and contains ...

Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) thin films were prepared at 600 °C by radio-frequency (rf) plasma pulsed laser deposition. All c-BN films prepared in Ar-rich plasma have poor adhesion on Si(100) substrates, but those prepared in pure N2 plasma can be maintained for more than 5 months without degradation. However, an increase of ion flux at an ion energy similar to that of pure N2 plasma results in the peeling of c-BN films. Thus, application of pure N2 plasma with suppressed ion flux can improve c-BN film ...

Carbon nitride (CN) thin films were prepared at 600 °C by rf plasma pulsed laser deposition. As we increased the magnitude of the negative dc bias voltage, the CN bonds were transformed from a mixture of sp2 C–N and sp3 C–N states into a CN phase predominated by tetrahedral CN bonds. A biasing threshold of this transformation occurred due to the annihilation of the graphite microstructure, which coincided with a threshold of significant nitrogen incorporation. We found that suppression of graphite ...

von Willebrand factor is a large multimeric plasma protein which plays important roles in platelet aggregation, blood coagulation and probably also in the adhesion of endothelial cells. A 100‐kDa propeptide, called the propolypeptide of von Willebrand factor (pp‐vWF), is generated during biosynthesis. We found that pp‐vWF served as a substrate for transglutaminases including human factor XIIIa and guinea pig liver transglutaminase [Usui, T., Takagi, J. & Saito, Y. (1993) J. Biol. But WR-1065 alone (free SH form of WR-2721), and WR-2721 pre-incubated with mouse liver homogenate, showed radioprotective ability. It was found that mouse liver homogenate dephosphorylated WR-2721 to WR-1065. The highest WR-2721 metabolizing activity was found in mouse liver homogenate and Chang liver cell homogenate. ...

Abstract We have obtained tetrahedral carbon nitride (CN) films by r.f. plasma pulsed laser deposition at 600 °C. As we increase the magnitude of the negative d.c. bias voltage of the Si substrate, predominant formation of tetrahedral CN bonds and suppression of graphite-like CN state are found. By means of such a bias voltage, CN films with adaptable fraction of graphite-like and tetrahedral CN bonds can be tailored according to requirement. All these films are stable to annealing at 800 °C. Likewise, ...

During the photoirreversible degradation of a polymer solar cell (PSC), it is generally assumed that the photooxidation of the organic materials (P3HT, PCBM) affects the device performance. Photooxidation of the organic materials results in a decrease in absorbance as a result of photodecomposition. However, the effect of initial photooxidation on device performance remains to be investigated. In this study, we try to establish the correlation between the initial photooxidation of the organic material ...

We apply an improved Taylor expansion method, which is a variational scheme to the Ising model in two dimensions. This method enables us to evaluate the free energy and magnetization in strong coupling regions from the weak coupling expansion, even in the case of a phase transition. We determine the approximate value of the transition point using this scheme. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we find both stable and metastable physical states.
