Abstract Molecular weight (M) and concentration (c) dependencies of the viscosity were measured over wide ranges of M and c for concentrated solutions of linear and branched Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as well as of polystyrene (PS) in good and poor solvents, and the effect of branching and solvent on the flow properties was studied. The log η versus log M and log η versus log c curves for a given system can be superposed by the shift along the abscissa, giving smooth master curves. From the shift factors ...

Abstract Molecular weight M and concentration c dependencies of the zero‐shear viscosity (η) were measured over wide ranges of M and c for concentrated solutions of linear and branched poly(vinyl acetate) as well as of polystyrene under θ conditions. The log η versus log M and log η versus log c curves for a given system can be superposed by the horizontal shift along the abscissa, giving smooth master curves. From the shift factors the ratio of two exponents β and α, which appear in the following ...

To determine non-linear viscoelasticity parameters for disperse and high-polymeric systems, some fundamental relations have been derived between these parameters and the experimental quantities by viscoelastometry, particularly with a torsionally oscillating rheometer, on the basis of the general theory presented by Green and Rivlin. The non-linear viscoelasticity of several disperse systems consisting of polystyrene solutions and carbon black has been measured by means of the torsionally oscillating ...

The viscoelastic properties of poly(methyl methacrylates) obtained by anionic polymerization were measured in the molten state by means of a concentric cylinder type rheometer over wide ranges of frequency and temperature. From the frequency dependence of the storage modulus G′ and the loss modulus G″, the characteristic parameters in the terminal zone, such as zero-shear viscosity η0 and steady-state compliance Je0 were evaluated, and the dependence of these parameters on the molecular weight M ...

The viscoelastic properties of molten blends of poly(methyl methacrylate)s having different molecular weights were measured, and several characteristic parameters resulting from these measurements were determined. The Vogel temperature T0, plotted against the weight fraction of the high molecular-weight component, w2, has a minimum at about w2=0.2, while the temperature coefficient of the fractional free volume, αf, is almost constant in the entire range of w2. The steady-state compliance Je0 of ...

The star polymer samples were prepared by coupling narrow-distribution polystyryl anions with divinylbenzene and were characterized in terms of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and coupling ratio. Dynamic viscoelastic properties of star-shaped polystyrenes having different molecular weights (Ms=1.3∼20×104) and numbers (P=7∼39) of branches have been measured. The zero-shear viscosity η0 depends strongly upon the molecular weight at constant P, while it depends much less at constant Ms. ...

Shear and elongational flow properties of high density polyethylene melts are studied. Effects of long branching and molecular weight distribution on rheological properties are investigated for two types of samples, which are produced using different kind of catalysts. The following conclusions are obtained. (1) Contribution of a relaxation mechanism with very long relaxation times due to the long branch of the sample appears in dynamic viscoelastic functions, relaxation modulus and in elongational ...

The critical behavior of intrinsic viscosity near the gelation point was experimentally examined for poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) solutions. The constant of the Huggins equation for viscosity (k′) for PVA clusters was higher than that of linear PVA. The intrinsic viscosity ([η]) for PVA clusters was smaller than that of linear PVA at lower polymer concentrations, at which PVA solutions were prepared and cooled. The critical exponent of [η] was found to be 0.20. The weak divergence of [η] resembles the critical ...

Abstract Viscoelastic properties of polypropylene melts filled with small (0.15 μm) and large (4.0 μm) CaCO 3 particles have been measured. The effects of particle size, loading, and rheological history on the dispersion of particles have been investigated. The dispersion of particles was found to decisively influence the viscoelastic properties of these filled polymers. The systems filled with large particles exhibit a relatively stable viscoelastic behavior. The small particle‐filled polymers with ...

Poorly differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a malignant potential such as frequent microvascular invasion even if the tumor is smaller than 3 cm in diameter. The aim of this study was to clarify the preoperative predictors of poorly differentiated HCC for safe local ablation therapy.Sixty-six patients underwent a hepatic resection for solitary small-sized HCC (<or=3 cm) were included in this study. According to the postoperative histological examination, the patients were divided into ...

Abstract Background and Objectives It is important to identify prognostic factors in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) before hepatectomy. No previous studies have addressed the predictive efficacy of the preoperative doubling times of alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) and protein induced by vitamin K absence (PIVKA‐II). Methods A total of 210 HCC patients who underwent a hepatic resection between 1998 and 2006 were prospectively evaluated. Serum AFP and PIVKA‐II levels were measured at least twice ...
