Only 15% of brain death donors are considered suitable for lung transplantation (LTx). The normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion technique is used to potentially increase the availability of high-risk lung donors. We report our experience of LTx with initially rejected donors after ex vivo lung reconditioning (EVLR). From April 2011 to May 2013, we performed EVLR for 32 pairs of donor lungs deemed unsuitable for transplantation and rejected by the 11 French lung transplant teams. After EVLR, lungs with ...

Homeostatic turnover of the extracellular matrix conditions the structure and function of the healthy lung. In lung transplantation, long-term management remains limited by chronic lung allograft dysfunction, an umbrella term used for a heterogeneous entity ultimately associated with pathological airway and/or parenchyma remodeling. This study assessed whether the local cross-talk between the pulmonary microbiota and host cells is a key determinant in the control of lower airway remodeling posttransplantation. ...

Using the zero-phonon line (ZPL) emission of a single molecule, we realized a triggered source of near-infra-red (=785 nm) single photons at a high repetition rate.A Weierstrass solid immersion lens is used to image single molecules with an optical resolution of 300 nm (~0.4) and a high collection efficiency.Because dephasing of the transition dipole due to phonons vanishes at liquid helium temperatures, our source is attractive for the efficient generation of single indistinguishable photons.

The combined use of an electron energy loss spectrometer and an electron microscope provides some chemical information at the nanometer scale. The physics of the interaction processes between the incident electron beam and the thin sample foil is reviewed in terms of energy and momentum transfer. This analysis of the content of an electron energy loss spectrum allows us to establish rules for a satisfactory use of the information and to discuss the detection limits of this newly developed microanalytical ...

Abstract Energy loss spectra of high energy electrons transmitted through thin foils of scandium and yttrium have been registered using two different experimental techniques. A detailed comparison of the results allows to distinguish between the spectra of metals, hydrides, and oxides and to calculate the optical constants in the pure metals. It is shown that the electron excitation spectra of these elements contain two main contributions in the energy range between 5 and 60 eV: collective excitations ...

Abstract 4d electron excitations have been investigated in several rare‐earth metals (Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) by means of electron energy losses of a high energy (75 keV) electron beam. Experiments were made with a transmission electron microscope modified by the adjunction of a Castaing‐Henry dispersive system. The results of the measurements lying in the energy range between 120 and 190 eV agree rather well with X‐ray photoabsorption spectra and oscillator strengths calculated in an ...

We present an unbiased method for the estimation of the background in EELS spectra. It looks for the maximum likelihood of a power law model whose two dependent parameters A and R are estimated together with their variances and covariance. Applying the usual rules of error propagation, core-loss characteristic signals and thier variances are estimated. Confidence intervals for the relevant atomic concentrations are then established. Special attention is paid to the first- and second-kind risks when ...

The study of the electronic properties of small particles is of major interest because of their intriguing physicochemical properties. The very small electron probes available in scanning transmission electron microscopes offer unique capabilities for investigating small particles with subnanometer spatial resolution. The correlation between electron-energy-loss spectra and energy-filtered images is of great help in pinpointing the excitations under study. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental ...

By using the zero-phonon line emission of an individual organic molecule, we realized a source of indistinguishable single photons in the near infrared. A Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment is performed and a two-photon coalescence probability of higher than 50% at 2 K is obtained. The contribution of the temperature-dependent dephasing processes to the two-photon interference contrast is studied. We show that the molecule delivers nearly ideal indistinguishable single photons at the lowest ...

We present a method to suppress the roughness of the potential of a wire-based, magnetic atom guide: modulating the wire current at a few tens of kHz, the potential roughness, which is proportional to the wire current, averages to zero. Using ultracold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ clouds, we show experimentally that modulation reduces the roughness by at least a factor five without measurable heating or atom loss. This roughness suppression results in a dramatic reduction of the damping of center-of-mass oscillations.
