Study Design Delphi panel study. Background Biomechanical parameters measured during a drop vertical jump task are risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and are targeted during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. A clinically feasible tool that quantifies observed performance on the drop vertical jump would help inform treatment efforts. The content and scoring of such a tool should be deliberated on by a group of experts throughout its development. Objectives To establish ...

Stubbs and Stubbs present a novel visual mechanism based on chromatic aberration that might allow animals with only one spectral photoreceptor-type to perceive color (1) (see ref. 1 for details about their mechanism). The authors chose cephalopods to showcase their hypothesis and claim that discrepancies between earlier (2, 3) and recent (4, 5) negative behavioral color vision tests in cephalopods can be explained by their (1) mechanism. Although the Stubbs and Stubbs mechanism works in theory, we identified ...

This paper documents a sustained decline in exchange rate pass-through to U.S. import prices, from above 0.5 during the 1980s to somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.2 during the last decade. This decline in the pass-through coefficient is robust to the measure of foreign prices that is included in the regression (i.e., CPI versus PPI), whether the estimation is done in levels or differences, and whether U.S. prices are included as an explanatory variable. Notably, the largest estimates of pass-through ...

ABSTRACT How can scholars conduct field research when there is limited access to the field? This article first identifies how limited and uncertain field access can affect field research and then provides recommendations to address these challenges. We focus on conducting field research in Japan because of our substantive expertise, but we believe that the problems and solutions outlined in this article are applicable to a broad range of countries. Our hope is that this article contributes to the ...

Abstract Genetic engineering of allogeneic cell therapeutics that fully prevents rejection by a recipient’s immune system would abolish the requirement for immunosuppressive drugs or encapsulation and support large-scale manufacturing of off-the-shelf cell products. Previously, we generated mouse and human hypoimmune pluripotent (HIP) stem cells by depleting HLA class I and II molecules and overexpressing CD47 ( B2M −/− CIITA −/− CD47 + ). To determine whether this strategy is successful in non-human primates, ...

This research was conducted to assess the impact of various disinfectants on bacterial water quality within model distribution systems (i.e. annular reactors). After colonization with non-disinfected water, annular reactors were treated with relatively low doses of chlorine (0.4 mg/l), chlorine dioxide (0.15 mg/l), or chloramines (0.9 mg/l). Under the tested conditions, bacterial inactivation varied as a function of disinfectant type (ranking by efficiency per mg of oxidant: ClO2 > Cl2 > ClNH2) and ...

This study evaluates the synergistic effects of ultraviolet (UV) and secondary disinfectants on water quality in a model distribution system. Chemical disinfectants evaluated for residual disinfection include chlorine dioxide, monochloramine, and free chlorine. Results suggest that there may be synergistic effects between UV and the chemical disinfectants for controlling microbiological re-growth in drinking water distribution systems. UV disinfection appeared to increase the vulnerability of bacteria ...

Background: Women living with HIV in Canada experience barriers to comprehensive HIV care. We sought to describe care gaps across a typology of care. Methods: We analyzed baseline data from the Canadian HIV Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health Cohort Study (CHIWOS). A typology of care was characterized by primary HIV physician and care setting. Quality-of-care indicators included the following: Pap test, Pap test discussions, reproductive goal discussions, breast cancer screening, antiretroviral ...

The objective of this project was to determine the impact hydraulic dispersion has on the calibration of a flow-though model ultraviolet (UV)-disinfection system with chemical actinometry (potassium ferrioxalate) and MS 2 bacteriophage. Fluence was supplied by a medium-pressure ultraviolet lamp to a quartz tube (19 mm diameter) situated in a ventilated galvanized casing. The UV lamp was attached to a vertical position guide, for UV fluence to be varied by positioning the UV lamp at various vertical ...

In British Columbia (BC), over 11,000 people have died of an overdose since 2016. Recently, an all-party standing committee on health tabled a report identifying several gaps in BC’s overdose response. Chief among these is the inequitable distribution of supervised consumption and overdose prevention services across BC and barriers to accessing services that are currently available. In this context, public bathrooms continue to act as consumption spaces and contribute to overdose-related risks and ...

Pipe loop studies are used to evaluate corrosion control treatment, and updated regulatory guidance will ensure that they remain important for drinking water quality management. But the data they generate are difficult to analyze: nonlinear time trends, nondetects, extreme values, and autocorrelation are common attributes that make popular methods, such as the t- or rank-sum tests, poor descriptive models. Here, we propose a framework for describing pipe loop data that accommodates all of these ...
