These experiments provide a direct test of the hypothesis that median raphe lesion- or PCPA-induced hyperactivity in the rat is mediated specifically by the hippocampus. Previous studies had shown that a marked depletion of hippocampal serotonin accompanied median lesion-induced hyperactivity. In the present studies, aspiration of the anterodorsal hippocampus of adult male rats prior to median raphe lesions or PCPA administration abolished the ability of both of these treatments to produce locomotor ...

Two commercial thermoplastic block copolymer elastomers with a high stiffness were investigated as stamp materials for microcontact printing and compared to conventional poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Stamps with a relief structure were produced by hot embossing techniques, utilizing the thermoplastic properties of these rubberlike block copolymers. It is shown that the stamps based on these copolymers are able to transfer a thiol ink to a gold substrate. After printing, the thiol ink acts as an ...

Recently, the microstructuring of biological species, such as proteins, using microcontact printing (μCP), has become very popular. Microstructuring of proteins is useful for a variety of applications, such as biosensors, controlled cell growth and adhesion and microarrays for bioanalytical detection. Here the authors investigated the microcontact printing of proteins using a hydrophilic thermoplastic elastomeric stamp material. The emphasis is placed on the quality of the printed patterns with respect ...

A moderately hydrophilic, thermoplastic elastomer (poly(ether-ester)) was investigated as a stamp material for microcontact printing of a polar ink: pentaerythritol-tetrakis-(3-mercaptopropionate). Stamps with a relief structure were produced from this polymer by hot embossing, and a comparison was made with conventional poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and oxygen-plasma-treated PDMS. It is shown that the hydrophilic stamps can be used for the repetitive printing (without re-inking) of at least 10 consecutive ...

Background. Increasing the ability of antitumor effector cells to leave the vasculature and gain access to tumor cells may improve therapeutic efficacy. We undertook this study to determine whether increased expression of intercellular adhesion of molecular-1 (ICAM-1) by gene transfection would result in an improved response to adoptive immunotherapy in vivo. Methods. C57BL/6 mice received 1×106 tumor cells on day 0. Tumor cells examined were MCA-105 (parental), NeoR (MCA-105 transfected with the neomycin ...

Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and involvement in Ukrainian border regions pose serious consequences and questions. The precedence of Russian military intervention illustrates the porosity and potential for conflicts in other post-Soviet border regions. The Estonian borderland city of Narva, populated predominantly by Russian-speakers, is one such potential site of tension. Based on preliminary findings and data collected in Narva in 2013, this article provides an overview of citizenship, ...

Groundwater is not only a vital resource, but also one of the largest terrestrial aquatic ecosystems on Earth. However, to date, ecological criteria are often not considered in routine groundwater monitoring, mainly because of the lack of suitable ecological assessment tools. Prokaryotic microorganisms are ubiquitous in groundwater ecosystems even under the harshest conditions, making them ideal bioindicators for ecological monitoring. We have developed a simple, inexpensive approach that enables ...

Place attachment is recognized as integral to addressing place-based challenges, such as environmental degradation. In combination with place identity and place meaning, place attachment can contribute to one's engagement in environmental stewardship behaviors. Building upon ongoing efforts to monitor the health and recovery of Washington's Puget Sound, a region experiencing profound population growth, the authors examine the relationships among place attachment, residency, and environmental stewardship. ...

Rats were treated with daily i.p. injections of reserpine (0.5 mg/kg) or saline for 10 days. Twenty-four hours after the last injection they were given (+)-amphetamine (0.25, 0.50, or 1 mg/kg) or saline and their locomotor activity was measured for 3 hr. In accordance with previous reports, (+)-amphetamine induced a significantly greater stimulation of spontaneous activity after reserpine. The effect was variable however insofar as it was observed only in those animals that suffered marked weight loss during ...

Abstract As an alternative to expensive extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins generally applied as coatings in Petri dishes used for cell binding, an innovative system based on epoxide‐functionalized monolayers capable of protein binding is proposed. Since cells bind to material surfaces through proteins, protein‐binding surfaces should also promote cell binding. Here we investigate how the cell‐binding properties of an epoxide‐functionalized surface compares with ECM protein gel coated surfaces and ...

Abstract We considered a common research tool for understanding the mental models behind conservation decisions: cognitive mapping. Developed by cognitive psychologists, the elicitation of mental models with cognitive mapping has been used to understand soil management in Spain, invasive grass management in Australia, community forest management in the Bolivian Amazon, and small‐scale fisheries access in Belize, among others. A generalized cognitive mapping process considers specific factors associated ...

The Biomass to Liquid (BtL) Fischer-Tropsch (FT) route converts lignocellulosic feedstock to renewable hydrocarbons. This, paper shows a novel production route for biomass-derived synthetic paraffin wax via gasification of lignocellulosic feedstock, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and hydrofining. The Fischer-Tropsch wax was fractionated, refined and analyzed with respect to compliance to commercial standards. The fractioned paraffin waxes were hydrofined using a commercial sulfide NiMo–Al2O3 catalyst ...

ABSTRACT Miscible S‐SBR (solution styrene–butadiene copolymer)/BR (polybutadiene homopolymer) blends are used in multiple applications like modern passenger car tire treads. Despite their miscibility, there is a problem to predict tire performance due to dynamical heterogeneities present in the S‐SBR/BR blends. On the one hand, S‐SBR/BR blends have a thermorheologically complex behavior, which complicates the prediction of the temperature‐ and frequency‐dependence of material properties. On the other ...

Shorelines are distinct places that provide a diverse range of ecosystem services to local communities. These services include local foods, economic opportunities, recreational activities, therapeutic blue spaces, and notably sense of place. Shoreline benefits have partly contributed to a global increase in coastal populations, including in the Puget Sound region of Washington State (United States). Coastal population increases have simultaneously increased pressures on and modifications of the region' ...

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of N-(3-diethylphosphatoxy)propyl-11-mercaptoundecanamide (PPMA) were prepared on gold surfaces. The SAMs, consisting originally of a phosphonate surface functionality, were subjected to step-by-step acidic hydrolysis to reveal two different functional groups: (a) a hydroxyl and (b) a carboxylic group. At each stage these SAMs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. ...

Consilience is the integration of disciplinary knowledges in search of a more complete truth. In the complex context of conservation, where human activities are increasingly impacting the population status of many species, this endeavor is particularly important. Yet, to date, we have had limited attempts at unifying diverse sources of knowledge around a conservation issue. Focusing on orca conservation specifically, we share the perspectives of five scholars from five disciplines to demonstrate ...
