The developing fetus is often subjected to the influence of various drugs ingested by the mother during gestation. Currently, caffeine is one of the more common drugs used by the pregnant patient. It is important that the patient be made aware that caffeine is a drug and that it may cause potential harm to the fetus. Until more scientific data are available, it is our recommendation that moderate to excessive use of caffeine during pregnancy be curtailed and that mild use be decided on an individual ...

Recent research on intrusion detection in supervisory data acquisition and control (SCADA) and DCS systems has focused on anomaly detection at protocol level based on the well-defined nature of traffic on such networks. Here, we consider attacks which compromise sensors or actuators (including physical manipulation), where intrusion may not be readily apparent as data and computational states can be controlled to give an appearance of normality, and sensor and control systems have limited accuracy. ...

The question we pose in this paper is: How can wisdom and its inherent drive for integration help information systems in the development of practices for responsibly and ethically managing and using big data, ubiquitous information and algorithmic knowledge and so make the world a better place? We use the recent financial crises to illustrate the perils of an overreliance on and misuse of data, information and predictive knowledge when global Information Systems are not wisely integrated. Our analysis ...

This paper explores the bond flows dynamics for a set of emerging market economies. It documents that these flows have, in general, positive co-movements, and exhibit risk-reversals, and negative feedback with their associated risk premiums. A number of mechanisms could explain these features. However, we find evidence that lends support to the presence of the risk-taking channel. In particular, we find indications that unexpected changes in US monetary policy affect such dynamics, and that their ...

Pregaming (a.k.a., “prepartying,” “pre-funking,” or “predrinking”) consists of drinking before going to a social function or gathering where alcohol may or may not be served. Existing research suggests that pregaming in high school and pre-college (i.e., the period between high school graduation and the start of college) is widespread. Moreover, pregaming prevalence appears to rapidly increase after students graduate from high school and transition into college. Thus, the purpose of this brief review ...
