Selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the most reliable and efficient procedures for Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) due to the capability to produce components with high standards in terms of dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and mechanical behavior. In the past years, the SLM process has been utilized for direct manufacturing of fully functional mechanical parts in various industries, such as aeronautics and automotive. Hence, it is essential to investigate the SLM procedure for the most ...

This work aims to improve the properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) for future biomedical applications by investigating the effect of montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay on physicochemical and mechanical behavior. PLA nanocomposite filaments were fabricated using different amounts of MMT (1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 wt.%) and 2 wt.% Joncryl chain extenders. The 3D-printed specimens were manufactured using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). The composites were characterized by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Melt ...

The objective of this research is the fabrication of biodegradable starch-based sandwich materials. The investigated sandwich structures consist of maize starch-based films as skins and biodegradable 3D-printed polylactic filaments (PLA) as the core. To investigate the tensile properties of the skins, conventional and nanocomposite films were prepared by a solution mixing procedure with maize starch and glycerol as the plasticizer, and they were reinforced with sodium montmorillonite clay, cellulose ...

One of the main advantages of Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the ability to produce topologically optimized parts with high geometric complexity. In this context, a plethora of architected materials was investigated and utilized in order to optimize the 3D design of existing parts, reducing their mass, topology-controlling their mechanical response, and adding remarkable physical properties, such as high porosity and high surface area to volume ratio. Thus, the current re-view has been focused on ...

This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of additive manufactured Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures, such as Gyroid, Schwarz Diamond and Schwarz Primitive. Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technique was utilized in order to fabricate lattice structures with different relative densities, at 10%, 20% and 30%, using Polylactic acid (PLA). The test specimens were formed by structural TPMS unit cells and they were tested under quasi-static compression. A finite element analysis (FEA) ...

Vanillic acid that can be prepared from lignin through vanillin is a relatively new and most promising aromatic monomer for the synthesis of biobased polyesters. Due to its structural similarity to terephthalic acid, vanillic acid-containing polymers have been reported to exhibit comparable properties to poly(ethylene terephthalate). Herein, the nanomechanical and thermal properties and crystallization behavior of poly(propylene vanillate) (PPV), a new alipharomatic biobased polyester synthesized ...

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is currently the most popular 3D printing method, where thermoplastic polymers are predominantly used. Among them, the biobased poly(lactic acid) (PLA) governs the FDM filament market, with demand higher than supply, since not all grades of PLA are suitable for FDM filament production. In this work, the effect of a food grade chain extender (Joncryl ADR® 4400) on the physicochemical properties and printability of PLA marketed for injection molding was examined. All samples ...

The present study aimed to fabricate a hollow microneedle device consisting of an array and a reservoir by means of 3D printing technology for transdermal peptide delivery. Hollow microneedles (HMNs) were fabricated using a biocompatible resin material, while PLA filament was used for the reservoirs. The fabricated microdevice was characterized by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements and leakage inspection ...

The mechanical properties of Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printed specimens of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), ABS reinforced with carbon fibers (ABS/CFs) and ABS reinforced with carbon nanotubes (ABS/CNTs) are investigated in this paper using various experimental tests. In particular, the mechanical performance of the fabricated specimens was determined by conducting compression and cyclic compression testing, as well as nanoindentation tests. In addition, the design and the manufacturing ...

Current developments in additive manufacturing (AM) technologies enable the fabrication of complex geometries with a variety of materials. Utilizing AM techniques, lattice structures are usually employed for the topology optimization (TO) process in various industries. Therefore, it is essential to identify the effective mechanical behavior of the lattices and establish finite element (FE) models capable to evaluate their performance. This research focuses on four lattice structures consisted of struts, ...
