Inflammation is a complex vascular response that has evolved to eliminate infection and to repair injured tissue. It is subject to tight regulatory control of its initiation and resolution. Failure of an inflammatory response to resolve has become recognised as a major contributor to the pathology of diverse diseases (including acute brain injuries). Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine and key contributor to damage after acute brain injury. Understanding the regulation of IL-1 production ...

Recent years have brought in an increased interest to develop improved polymyxins. The currently used polymyxins, i.e. polymyxin B and colistin (polymyxin E) are pentacationic lipopeptides that possess a cyclic heptapeptide part with three positive charges, a linear "panhandle" part with two positive charges, and a fatty acyl tail. Unfortunately, their clinical use is shadowed by their notable nephrotoxicity. We have previously developed a polymyxin derivative NAB739 which lacks the positive charges ...

The UVA (320–380 nm) component of sunlight has oxidizing properties which may be deleterious to skin cells and tissue but can also lead to the strong up-regulation of the heme-catabolizing enzyme, heme oxygenase-1. This enzyme has well-established antioxidant actions in cells as well as anti-inflammatory properties in mammals. There is also evidence from rodent models that this enzyme is responsible for the UVA-mediated protection against UVB-induced immunosuppression that occurs in skin. The relevance ...

Background Hysterectomy for a benign condition is common, particularly in the underserved. The objective was to determine if ethnic differences could be explained by known risk factors. Methods A phone survey was conducted at random on 15,160 women, ages 40–55, from seven US cities. Subjects were 49.9% Caucasian, 28.1% African American, 12.3% Hispanic, and 9.8% Asian American. Results Ethnicity was associated with past hysterectomy (odds ratio [OR]: Caucasian = 1.0, African American = 1.66; confidence ...

Alistipes (previously Bacteroides) are strictly anaerobic gram-negative rods that resemble the Bacteroides fragilis group in that most species are bile-resistant and indole-positive; however, they are only weakly saccharolytic and most species produce light brown pigment only on laked rabbit blood agar. In this retrospective study, we re-identified 18 organisms previously identified phenotypically as "Bacteroides putredinis-like", but that did not produce pigment on routine media. The strains were ...

Lag between head movement and the time to render the visual consequences of the movement during head mounted display (HMD) applications presents challenges in the appearance of a stable image. This appearance of an image to “lag” behind or “swim” about may cause detriments in user performance, lack of user acceptance, and simulator sickness. These known potential consequences of HMD use motivated the current work to explore the human capability to detect display lag. The aim in this study was to gain ...

The purpose of this study was to provide a descriptive review of current sample-size determination methodologies in ML applied to medical imaging and to propose recommendations for future work in the field. We conducted a systematic literature search of articles using Medline and Embase with keywords including "machine learning," "image," and "sample size." This study examined whether the conspicuity of road workers at night can be enhanced by distributing retroreflective strips across the body to present a pattern of biological motion (biomotion). Twenty visually normal drivers (mean age = 40.3 years) participated in an experiment conducted at two open-road work sites (one suburban and one freeway) at night-time. At each site, four road workers walked in place wearing a standard road worker night vest either (a) alone, (b) with additional retroreflective ...

Despite the routine nature of comparing sequence variations identified during clinical testing to database records, few databases meet quality requirements for clinical diagnostics. To address this issue, The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) in collaboration with the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA), and the Human Variome Project (HVP) is developing standards for DNA sequence variation databases intended for use in the Australian clinical environment. Purpose Secondary usage of patient data has recently become of increasing interest for the development and application of computer analytic techniques. Strict oversight of these data is required and the individual patients themselves are integral to providing guidance. We sought to understand patients' attitudes to sharing their imaging data for research purposes. These images could provide a great wealth of information for researchers. Koreans are recently at higher risk for coronary heart disease than are the Japanese. We aimed to evaluate levels of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and coronary risk factors in Korean and Japanese men in the post–World War II birth cohort. We conducted a population-based study of 352 randomly selected healthy men 40 to 49 years of age: 102 Koreans in Ansan City, Gyeonggi-do, Korea and 250 Japanese in Kusatsu City, Shiga, Japan. In 1976, P. R. Scott characterized the Ehrhart polynomials of convex integral polygons. We study the same question for Ehrhart polynomials and quasi-polynomials of non-integral convex polygons. Turning to the case in which the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial has nontrivial quasi-period, we determine the possible minimal periods of the coefficient functions of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polygon.

The in vivo effect of dosing levamisole as a pulse release within an ivermectin (IVM) controlled-release device (CRD) was simulated by periodic dosing of levamisole to Haemonchus contortus-infected sheep already treated with an IVM CRD. The rationale for this treatment combination arises from the need to find alternative approaches to the treatment of gastrointestinal parasites in livestock in the face of increasing levels of anthelmintic resistance which is now widespread in Australia. Often, platform or poster presentations at regional or national pediatric meetings end with a limitations slide citing the "single site" as a threat to generalizability. Regional and national research networks are a solution to overcome this constraint; however, for a variety of reasons including time, expertise, and mentorship, junior researchers (eg, residents, fellows, and junior faculty) often do not access such networks for their studies. The Continuity Research Network (CORNET) is the Academic ...

Thromboembolic complications are a significant cause of mortality and re-hospitalization in heart failure (HF) patients. One source of thrombi is the ventricular endocardial surface that becomes increasingly pro-thrombotic as HF progresses. Anticoagulation comes with bleeding risks so identifying therapeutic agents for improving cardiac endothelial health are of critical clinical importance. Endocardial endothelial cells are closely apposed to cardiac sympathetic nerves. In HF, cardiac sympathetic ...

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a common and serious complication of invasive cardiac procedures. Quality improvement programs have been associated with a lower incidence of CI-AKI over time, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence on clinical decision support for prevention of CI-AKI and its impact on processes of care and clinical outcomes. The Contrast-Reducing Injury Sustained by Kidneys (Contrast RISK) study will implement an evidence-based multifaceted intervention designed ...
