It is well-established that the host microRNA (miRNA) milieu has a significant influence on the etiology of disease. In the context of viruses, such as hepatitis C virus (HCV), microRNAs have been shown to influence viral life cycles both directly, through interactions with the viral genome, and indirectly, through regulation of critical virus-associated host pathways. Several miRNA profiling studies have demonstrated that HCV infection aberrantly regulates a significant number of human miRNA. However, ...

Production of calcium carbonate by marine calcifying organisms has been shown to decrease under increasing CO2. This effect appears to be driven by a decrease in [CO32−]. The modelling study here described aims at investigating whether the success of a marine calcifying phytoplankton species, the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi, may be tied to [CO32−]. The work highlights the complex interactions between the carbonate system variables and spring blooms, and the possibility of a link to the competition ...

To describe ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of adiposis dolorosa, Dercum's disease, and to evaluate the MRI features prospectively against a large number of MRI examinations.Institutional review board approval for this study was obtained. The imaging features at MRI and ultrasound of 13 cases of adiposis dolorosa (nine female, four male; age range 32-72 years) were reviewed. MRI findings typical for adiposis dolorosa were proposed and prospectively evaluated on 6247 MRI examinations ...

The in vitro activity of 11 antimicrobials was tested against 74 recent anaerobic isolates obtained from pretreatment cultures in pediatric patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections using the CLSI M11-A-6 agar dilution method. Carbapenems, beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations and metronidazole retained good activity, while all Bacteroides fragilis group species produced beta-lactamase and were penicillin resistant and 43% were either intermediately susceptible or resistant to clindamycin. ...

This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand–Tsetlin polytopes arising in the representation theory of ${\frak gl}_n \Bbb C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand–Tsetlin pattern. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand–Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct ...

Water resources on the Canadian Prairies are at risk due to human settlement, agricultural intensification, and climatic change. The Red River Valley (RRV), Manitoba, Canada, represents a nexus of these cumulative stressors. Here land use change, combined with a recent increase in precipitation and runoff, imperils the protective function of tributaries draining to Lake Winnipeg. A concerted research effort over the past decade has greatly improved availability of data and knowledge about the RRV. ...

Women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Traditional CVD and SLE-disease related risk factors do not fully account for this increased risk. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) is a visceral adipose depot in close proximity to blood vessels possibly influencing CVD. We hypothesized that women with SLE have an increased volume of descending thoracic aortic PVAT (aPVAT) associated with increased vascular calcification.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4, CD152) is an inhibitory T cell receptor predominately expressed on activated T cells. The duck CTLA-4 (DuCTLA-4) cDNA and a transcript lacking the predicted transmembrane encoding region (DuCTLA-4ΔTM) were isolated from splenocytes using RT-PCR. The predicted DuCTLA-4 protein showed an identity of 92%, 49% and 47% with chicken, human and mouse homologues, respectively. Sequence comparison revealed conservation of residues implicated in the B7 ligand ...

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator plays a key role in maintenance of lung fluid homeostasis. Cigarette smoke decreases CFTR expression in the lung but neither the mechanisms leading to CFTR loss, nor potential ways to prevent its loss have been identified to date. The molecular mechanisms leading to down-regulation of CFTR by cigarette smoke were determined using pharmacologic inhibitors and silencing ribonucleic acids (RNAs).Using human bronchial epithelial cells, here we show that ...

We assessed the accuracy and reliability of maternal recall of infant birth weight 35 to 70 years after delivery. A total of 120 well functioning women (mean age 80 years; 45% Black) reported the birth weight for each live birth and then provided documentation of birth weights (n = 22) or reported birth weights a second time (n = 98). Agreement between recalled and documented birth weights was high for first births (ICC = 0.96) but moderate for subsequent births (ICC = 0.59). Maternal recall was highly reliable ...

Although researchers have long understood that drivers have difficulty seeing pedestrians at night and that reflective clothing can dramatically enhance pedestrian conspicuity, the extent to which pedestrians understand these facts is unclear. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition affecting more than 20% of men over 60 years, yet little is known about its genetic architecture. We performed a genome-wide association study of ED in 6,175 case subjects among 223,805 European men and identified one locus at 6q16.3 (lead variant rs57989773, OR 1.20 per C-allele; p = 5.71 × 10-14), located between MCHR2 and SIM1. In silico analysis suggests SIM1 to confer ED risk through hypothalamic dysregulation. Mendelian randomization provides evidence ...

The human spine is a highly specialized structure that protects the neuraxis and supports the body during movement, but its complex structure is a challenge for imaging. Radiographs can provide fine bony detail, but lack soft tissue definition and can be complicated by overlying structures. MR imaging allow(s) excellent soft tissue contrast, but some bony abnormalities can be difficult to discern. This makes the 2 modalities highly complementary. In this article, the authors discuss the correlation ...
