Extended Gaussian basis sets have been calculated for the neutral and trivalent rare earth atoms. The characteristics of these sets, which are available on request, are reported. The quality of the wave functions is discussed on the basis of a comparison of a number of calculated properties with those of numerical Hartree–Fock calculations. The agreement shown is very satisfactory.

Fourteen years into post-apartheid South Africa, learning institutions are still facing the challenge of ensuring access to and success in education for all. Institutions for higher learning have experienced a number of mergers, and this article reflects on the surprising patterns of student performance in a case where one of the campuses of a historically black university (HBU) was incorporated into a historically white university (HWU). This mixed method research was done on two groups of foundation ...

Abstract The schedule in dosing of intravesical chemotherapy has thus far received little attention. Correlation of optimal contact time with bladder toxicity, as well as maximal chemotherapeutic effect for one of the drugs of first choice for intravesical instillation, i.e. mitomycin C (MMC), is a particularly important question. In a randomized study, we treated bladder cancer patients with intravesical MMC using 30‐min and 60‐min dwelling times. There were 28 evaluable patients in each of the ...

The development of geographical information systems (GIS) and the interoperability between these systems demands new requirements for the description of the underlying data. The exchange of data between GIS systems is problematic and often fails due to confusion in the meaning of concepts. The term semantic translator, a translator between GIS systems and/or catalogue systems which gives the user the option to map data between the systems is a topic of current research. This paper provides an overview ...

Abstract The wind farm at Norddeich consists of 5 wind turbines of 16 m rotor diameter and 55 kW power rating. The turbines are arranged in a straight line with a spacing of approximately 4 rotor diameters. Extensive measurements were performed to evaluate the effects of wake imersion on the farm efficiency. The power reduction characteristics are compared with predictions of two standard semi-empirical farm models, the Lissaman and the Riso model.

This chapter discusses a top-down approach to modelling soccer knowledge, as it can be found in soccer theory books. The goal is to model soccer strategies and tactics in a way that they are usable for multiple robotic soccer leagues in the RoboCup. We investigate if and how soccer theory can be formalized such that specifi cation and execution are possible. The advantage is clear: theory abstracts from hardware and from specifi c situations in different leagues. We introduce basic primitives compliant ...

Will we see autonomous humanoid robots that play (and win) soccer against the human soccer world champion in the year 2050? This question is not easy to answer, and the idea is quite visionary. However, this is the goal of the RoboCup Federation. There are serious research questions that have to be tackled behind the scenes of a soccer game: perception, decision making, action selection, hardware design, materials, energy, and more. RoboCup is also about the nature of intelligence, and playing soccer ...

Abstract Background High-throughput screening (HTS) is one of the main strategies to identify novel entry points for the development of small molecule chemical probes and drugs and is now commonly accessible to public sector research. Large amounts of data generated in HTS campaigns are submitted to public repositories such as PubChem, which is growing at an exponential rate. The diversity and quantity of available HTS assays and screening results pose enormous challenges to organizing, standardizing, ...

Agents in dynamic environments have to deal with world representations that change over time. In order to allow agents to act autonomously and to make their decisions on a solid basis an interpretation of the current scene is necessary. If intentions of other agents or events that are likely to happen in the future can be recognized the agent's performance can be improved as it can adapt the behavior to the situation. In this work we present an approach which applies unsupervised symbolic learning ...

Huge amounts of high-throughput screening (HTS) data for probe and drug development projects are being generated in the pharmaceutical industry and more recently in the public sector. The resulting experimental datasets are increasingly being disseminated via publically accessible repositories. However, existing repositories lack sufficient metadata to describe the experiments and are often difficult to navigate by non-experts. The lack of standardized descriptions and semantics of biological assays ...

Although recent (physical) robots have powerful sensors and actuators their abilities to show intelligent behavior is often limited. One key reason is the lack of an appropriate spatial representation. Spatial knowledge plays a crucial role in navigation, (self- and object-)localization, planning and reasoning for physically grounded robots. However, it is a major difficulty of most existing approaches that each of these tasks imposes heterogeneous requirements on the representation. In this paper, ...

High-level online methods become more and more attractive with the increasing abilities of players and teams in the simulation league. As in real soccer, the recognition and prediction of strategies (e.g. opponent’s formation), tactics (e.g. wing play, offside traps), and situations (e.g. passing behavior) is important. In 2001, we proposed an approach where spatio-temporal relations between objects are described and interpreted in order to detect some of the above mentioned situations. In this paper ...

Our main objective is to develop user-centric services to support better governance, democratic processes, and a sustainable and balanced development of rural and urban areas around the North Sea. We also discuss about the spatial data infrastructure consisting of a spatial reasoner, a Web catalog service, distributed Web map services, and a generic Web ...

Bioinformatics and computer aided drug design rely on the curation of a large number of protocols for biological assays that measure the ability of potential drugs to achieve a therapeutic effect. These assay protocols are generally published by scientists in the form of plain text, which needs to be more precisely annotated in order to be useful to software methods. We have developed a pragmatic approach to describing assays according to the semantic definitions of the BioAssay Ontology (BAO) project, ...

The lack of established standards to describe and annotate biological assays and screening outcomes in the domain of drug and chemical probe discovery is a severe limitation to utilize public and proprietary drug screening data to their maximum potential. We have created the BioAssay Ontology (BAO) project (http://bioassayontology.org) to develop common reference metadata terms and definitions required for describing relevant information of low-and high-throughput drug and probe screening assays and ...
