Abstract The polarization of the S wave at stations distributed azimuthally about the source is examined for each of twenty-five Aleutian Island earthquakes. A combination of data from the first motion of P and from the polarization of S is then used to study the focal mechanisms of the earthquakes. This combination of P and S wave data is found to make possible a good determination of the focal mechanism in cases where data from the first motion of P alone do not suffice. The earthquakes are divided ...

abstract In this paper a numerical approach to the determination of focal mechanisms based on the observation of the polarization of the S wave at N stations is presented. Least-square methods are developed for the determination of the orientation of the single and double couple sources. The methods allow a statistical evaluation of the data and of the accuracy of the solutions.

Abstract The earthquake sequences connected with the earthquakes of August 31 and September 14, 1963 in the Salinas-Watsonville region of California are here studied with reference to the background seismic activity. A very favorable distribution of permanent and mobile stations in this area permits the analysis to include earthquakes of small magnitudes. The mechanism of the larger aftershocks of both sequences is found to be similar to the mechanism of the main shock of September 14, 1963. The ...

Abstract A group of 23 earthquakes in the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula from 1962 to 1964 are studied in order to determine the characteristics of the regional stresses. The largest of these earthquakes which occurred in March 15, 1964, with magnitude M = 7.1, has been used in the determination of the focal mechanism using P- and S-wave data. For this analysis a new computer program was used which finds a solution for the orientation of a point source based on the polarization of the S-wave ...

The mechanism of the Spanish earthquake of March 15, 1964 has been investigated by means of body and surface waves. The double-couple source orientation obtained from the body-wave analysis agrees with the Rayleigh waves radiation pattern which selects the plane of faulting as that striking N 65°E and dipping 80° NE. This direction agrees with the strike of the Guadalquivir fault and with that of the faults transverse to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The dimension of the fault obtained from the directivity ...

abstract A computer program has been developed to find the orientation of a double couple source model for the mechanism of an earthquake which best satisfies the data from P and S waves. The relationship between the two axes of the solution given by the equations for the polarization angle of S is used in order to rapidly find the orientation of the source model for which a total error value involving the error of S and P data is a minimum. The program gives best results for data from homogeneous ...

A generalized form of the directivity function has been used to determine the length and the rupture velocity of four earthquakes with known vertical strike slip faulting. For body wave magnitudes between 5.7 and 7.0, the lengths vary from 18 to 35 km with a rupture velocity of 1.5 kms−1. Seismic moments have been determined from the spectral amplitude densities and the theoretical response to a point source model. From these values, stress drops of 2 to 30 bars and average dislocations of 4 to ...

Abstract The earthquake of February 28, 1969, which occurred about 500 km west of the Strait of Gibraltar, was felt over the entire Iberian Peninsula, in a wide region of Morocco, and south to the Canary Islands. It had a long sequence of aftershocks continuing for at least 10 months, but, nevertheless, most of the energy seems to have been liberated in the main shock of which the mb was 7.4. The source mechanism solution indicates a fault plane striking N 67°W and dipping 68°SW, with motion principally ...

Abstract Three series of aftershocks occurred in the region near Hollister, less than 15 km from the San Andreas Geophysical Observatory in 1968, 1970, and 1971 following shocks of magnitudes 2.3, 3.2, and 4.0, respectively. The high-gain system operating at SAO permitted a full study of these series for events as small as magnitude -0.7. The distribution of time intervals between consecutive shocks and magnitudes show certain definite differences in the time, space, and magnitude structure of the ...

Abstract Microearthquake activity during the 4-year interval 1968 to 1971 in a region of 25 km radius, centered on the San Andreas fault near Hollister, has been monitored by means of high-gain high-frequency seismographs which allow detection of events as small as magnitude zero within the region. The distribution of the 4764 microearthquakes shows a high degree of clustering. The series of time intervals between consecutive shocks can be described approximately by a gamma distribution whose shape ...

abstract The increase in the number of determinations of fault-plane solutions and their use for inferences on regional and local tectonics and stress fields makes it advisable to treat them in a standard way in groups on a regional basis. Probability models for joint group estimation of the shear dislocations, involving data from I earthquakes and J observations of the same region, are presented. The general model gives the probability πij of reading a compression (Yij = 1) for the P wave from event ...

Data concerning this earthquake and the seismicity of the surrounding area have been examined. Large historical earthquakes before 1884 show that destructive shocks in the area have a recurrence period of about two hundred years. Recent seismic activity has been high from 1910 to 1955 and lower thereafter. Total number of casualties for the 1884 earthquake is estimated at 745 dead and 1475 wounded. Damage to buildings extended to 4399 houses totally destroyed and 6316 partially damaged. A new intensity ...

Major tectonic units of Spain have been investigated by deep seismic sounding experiments since 1974 to determine crustal structures and to delineate their differences. These areas are the central part of the Hercynian Meseta, and the Alpine chains: the Betic Cordillera in the south, including the Balearic promontory and the Alboran Sea, and the Pyrenees in the north. The main features of the crust and the upper mantle along a NNE-SSW cross-section from the Pyrenees to the Alboran Sea are described. ...

Deep seismic profiling was carried out in south and central Oaxaca as a multinational (Mexico, Spain and Switzerland) project. Sixteen sea-bottom explosions, ranging from 20 to 1000 kg were recorded by thirty portable instruments along three profiles, two along the coast and one going inland in an approximate N-S direction. Gravity surveys were carried out over the seismic profile lines, and the resulting Bouguer anomalies are interpreted together with the seismic data. Preliminary results indicate ...

Abstract Recent improvements in regional seismological networks allow a better definition of the seismicity and the determination of focal mechanisms in south Spain. This region is part of the lithospheric plate boundary between Africa and Eurasia and shows a continuous seismic activity of moderate magnitude ( M h h ≈ 650 km) earthquakes also occurring in the region. Eight fault-plane solutions have been determined that can be related to the tectonics of the area. The solutions for the shallow shocks ...

A study and partial revision of the seismicity and source mechanisms of earthquakes are presented for the oceanic plate boundary of Eurasia and Africa from the Azores islands to the Strait of Gibraltar. Focal mechanisms of 36 earthquakes, wave-form modelling of 4 and seismic moments and dimensions of 28, have been calculated. These results indicate that the boundary is divided into three sections with different characteristics: the Azores, the Central section and the East section. The Azores section ...
