A distributed population balance model of influenza A virus replication in adherent Madin-Darby canine kidney cells has been developed to reproduce and interpret flow cytometry data for virus propagation in microcarrier culture. The population of cells is differentiated into uninfected, infected and degraded cells. As an internal coordinate the number of intracellular viral components is considered. The main focus of the model is to link the time course of intracellular virus protein accumulation ...

The influence of PEGylation on polyplex stability from poly(ethylene imine), PEI, and plasmid DNA was investigated both in vitro and after intravenous administration in mice. Polyplexes were characterized with respect to particle size (dynamic light scattering), zeta-potential (laser Doppler anemometry), and morphology (atomic force microscopy). Pharmacokinetics and organ accumulation of both polymers and pDNA were investigated using 125I and 32P radioactive labels, respectively. Furthermore gene expression ...

It has been previously shown that estrogens may exert their action on human breast cancer cells through coordinated control of secreted growth factors which act in an autocrine and paracrine fashion. Growth stimulation of the androgen receptor negative prostate carcinoma cell line DU-145 by dihydrotestosterone in the presence of the androgen-responsive human prostate carcinoma cell line LNCaP now indicates that androgens may regulate growth of prostate carcinoma cells through related mechanisms. ...

Carbon materials have a lattice plane distance in the range of the kinetic diameter of small gas molecules making them interesting for gas separating membranes. Thin carbon layers (< 1 µm thickness) were prepared on the core side of ceramic support tubes. In gas permeation tests the smaller CO2-molecules permeate 50 times faster than the bigger CH4. The same behavior was found for enlarged tubular membranes of 0.5 m length. Because of the mole sieving behavior nearly constant separation performance ...

Abstract Carbon‐based membranes were manufactured by deposition of a polymeric precursor on asymmetric porous, ceramic substrates with tube channel geometry followed by pyrolysis. As a precursor, an unsaturated polyester resin prepared was used. The deposition of the carbon membranes results first on short substrate geometries (105 mm long single‐channel tube), further a first scaling‐up on 19‐channel geometry (250 mm and 600 mm length) was successfully performed. The synthesized carbon membranes ...

Summary S chmallenberg virus ( SBV ) is a member of the family B unyaviridae and mainly affects ruminants. It is transmitted by biting midges, first and foremost Culicoides spp., and causes congenital malformations reflected in arthrogryposis–hydranencephaly ( AH ) syndrome. The aim of this study was to collect data on the emergence of SBV as a new arthropod‐borne disease introduced into E urope in 2011. G ermany was located in the core region of the 2011/2012 epidemic. We report on the development of a new platform technology for the detection of genetic variations by means of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. TOPAS chips with integrated optics were exploited in combination with microfluidics. Abstract So far all lattices of regular microdomain structures reported in the literature, either based on binary AB, ABA or ternary ABC block copolymers, can be described using simple symmetry elements like mirror planes, symmetry centers and rotation axes. The microphase separation in a linear ternary block copolymer consisting of three immiscible components namely polystyrene, polybutadiene and polymethyl methacrylate gives rise to the formation of a chiral supramolecular assembly in which chirality ...

At the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, atomic nuclei are collided at ultra-relativistic energies. Many final-state particles are produced in each collision and their properties are measured by the ALICE detector. BackgroundThe African Surgical Outcomes Study (ASOS) showed that surgical patients in Africa have a mortality twice the global average. Existing risk assessment tools are not valid for use in this population because the pattern of risk for poor outcomes differs from high-income countries. The objective of this study was to derive and validate a simple, preoperative risk stratification tool to identify African surgical patients at risk for in-hospital postoperative mortality and severe complications. ...

There is a need to increase access to surgical treatments in African countries, but perioperative complications represent a major global health-care burden. There are few studies describing surgical outcomes in Africa. We did a 7-day, international, prospective, observational cohort study of patients aged 18 years and older undergoing any inpatient surgery in 25 countries in Africa (the African Surgical Outcomes Study). We aimed to recruit as many hospitals as possible using a convenience sampling ...

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/$c$ ...

Abstract Between 1 September and 4 October 2014, a combined airborne and ground-based measurement campaign was conducted to study tropical deep convective clouds over the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. The new German research aircraft, High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO), a modified Gulfstream G550, and extensive ground-based instrumentation were deployed in and near Manaus (State of Amazonas). The campaign was part of the German–Brazilian Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation ...
