We have recalculated interior structure of very massive stars of uniform chemical composition with the OPAL opacity. Very massive stars are found to develop a core-halo structure with a extended radiative-envelope. With the core-halo structure, a more massive star has a more extended envelope, then the track of upper zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) curves redward in the H-R diagram at > 100 M_sol (Z=0.02), >70 M_sol (Z=0.05), and > 15 M_sol for helium ZAMS (X=0., Z=0.02). Therefore, effective temperature of ...

Exosomes (extracellular vesicles/EVs) participate in cell–cell communication and contain bioactive molecules, such as microRNAs. However, the detailed characteristics of secreted EVs produced by cells grown under low pH conditions are still unknown. Here, we report that low pH in the cell culture medium significantly affected the secretion of EVs with increased protein content and zeta potential. The intracellular expression level and location of stably expressed GFP‐fused CD63 (an EV tetraspanin) ...

Commercially pure (CP) titanium with a bimodal harmonic structure, which is defined as coarse grained regions surrounded by a network of fine grains, was fabricated by consolidating mechanically milled powders to improve both strength and ductility. In order to determine the fatigue properties of bimodal harmonic structured CP titanium, four-point bending fatigue tests were conducted at a stress ratio of 0.1 under ambient conditions. The fracture surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy ( ...

Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) with a bimodal harmonic structure, which is defined as a coarse-grained structure surrounded by a network structure of fine grains, was fabricated using powder metallurgy to improve both the strength and ductility. The microstructure of the sintered compacts was characterized using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The areal fraction of the fine-grained structure in the harmonic structure tended to increase with the milling time. Tensile tests and four-point bending ...

Small fatigue crack propagation in bimodal harmonic structured titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) with high strength and ductility was examined under four-point bending at a stress ratio of 0.1 in the ambient laboratory atmosphere. The crack profiles were observed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and analyzed using an electron backscattered diffraction to examine the mechanism of small fatigue crack propagation. Fatigue crack paths were not influenced by the bimodal harmonic structure, ...

Precambrian microbial fossils show carbonaceous cellular structure, which often resemble in shape and size cyanobacteria and other prokaryotes. Morphological taxonomy of these minute, simple, and more or less degraded fossils is, however, often not enough to determine their precise phylogenetic positions. Here we report the results of micro-FTIR spectroscopic analyses of well-preserved microfossils in ∼850 Ma and ∼1900 Ma stromatolites, together with those of 8 species of extant prokaryotes and 5 ...

Mice and/or rats are usually used to detect chemical carcinogenicity and it has been known that there are species differences in carcinogenicity. To know whether there are species difference in genotoxicity, we conducted comparative investigation of multiple organs of mice and rats in the comet assay. Since the sensitivity to xenobiotics is different for different species, we queried species difference in the genotoxic sensitivity at one equitoxic level but not at one equidose. Therefore, groups ...

A cerebral injury was induced by the bilateral common carotid artery occlusion and recirculation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Employing this ischemia-recirculation rat model, the effects of beraprost sodium (beraprost) on (1) lipid peroxide formation, (2) the increase in the brain water content and (3) neurological signs were examined. In a dosage of 25 μg kg-1 or higher, beraprost, administered orally, significantly inhibited the formation of lipid peroxides in the brain and serum induced ...

Microaggregates have often been observed during hemodialysis and are clearly associated with complications of hemodialysis therapy. In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of two polysulfone membranes, with different abilities to activate blood cells, on the formation of these microaggregates; we also investigated their molecular mechanisms.Human whole blood was circulated through a mini-module dialyzer using the membranes in vitro; platelet-neutrophil complexes in blood were determined by ...

Aliphatic C-H bonds are one of the major organic signatures detected in Proterozoic organic microfossils, and their origin is a topic of interest. To investigate the influence of the presence of silica on the thermal alteration of aliphatic C-H bonds in prokaryotic cells during diagenesis, cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 were heated at temperatures of 250-450°C. Changes in the infrared (IR) signals were monitored by micro-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Micro-FTIR shows that ...

In the present work, the four-point bending loading fatigue properties of a heterogeneously distributed grain size microstructure consolidated from Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder are studied. The microstructure involved here, a so-called “harmonic structure”, possesses quasi-spherical large grain regions (“cores”) embedded in a continuous fine grain region (“shell”). Unlike the previous reports dealing with this issue, the effect of the specimen size on the fatigue characteristics is also probed, since two distinct ...

Activation of blood cells during hemodialysis is considered to be a significant determinant of biocompatibility of the hemodialysis membrane because it may affect patient health adversely through microvascular inflammation and oxidative stress. This study found very different cell activation among various polysulfone (PSf) hemodialysis membranes. For example, CX-U, a conventional PSf membrane, induced marked adhesion of platelets to its surface and increased surface expression of activated CD11b ...

Isoprenylation of geranylgeranyl‐pyrophosphate (GGPP) is critical for activation of small GTPases. We examined the roles of GGPP synthase (GGPPS) during the differentiation induced by the cell‐to‐cell contact in osteoblastic cell line MC3T3‐E1 cells. We found that (1) both mRNA and protein expression of GGPPS was reduced with decrement of its activity during the differentiation, (2) GGOH, which is converted to GGPP in the cells, inhibited differentiation. These results suggest that the decrement of ...

Fog is one of the remarkable features of the basin climate. In basins, generally, fog appears in early morning and disappears soon after sunrise. Autumn and early winter are the fog seasons in the inland of Japan. The observation and survey of the basin fog in the Ueno Basin, lie Prefecture, have been made by the authors since the summer of 1971. This is the first report on the fog observations in the Ueno Basin. There are many studies on the basin fog, and these studies clarify the features of ...

Fatigue properties of low carbon steels are known to be particularly sensitive to the loading frequency. Indeed, literatures related to this field usually point out an increasing fatigue life with an increase of the loading frequency. The authors of the present paper have already reconfirmed such a general phenomenon in the case of JIS S15C (0.15%C) low carbon steel. In that paper, S–N properties under usual frequencies of 0.2–140 Hz can be successfully normalized by the lower yield stress at the ...

The placenta acts as a barrier that protects the fetus from xenobiotics in the maternal blood. Phase II conjugation reactions in the placenta are considered to play an important role in this protective process by transferring polar hydroxyl groups and thereby imparting water solubility that facilitates the excretion of xenobiotics.
