鮮新世における北部フォッサマグナ地域への暖流の影響を明らかにすべく，新潟県中部の鎌倉沢川沿いに露出している四十日層，魚沼層群最下部の軟体動物化石を検討した．四十日層は含礫泥岩とシルト岩からなり，石灰質ナンノ化石のNN16帯下部～中部に対比され,上部中新統の西田尻層に不整合に重なる．また，魚沼層群最下部は主として砂岩と礫岩からなり，四十日層を整合に覆う．鎌倉沢川より産出した軟体動物群は鮮新-更新世の大桑万願寺動物群の特徴種や寒流系種を含むほか，ほぼ全層準から14種の暖流系種が認められた．後期鮮新世では，北部フォッサマグナ地域において，新発田地域から本研究地域を経て長野地域へと暖流系種の種数比は減少する．この原因として鮮新世には北部フォッサマグナ地域に北東に開いた大きな湾が発達し，浅い暖流は対馬海峡から北東へ流入していたことが挙げられる.

現在, われわれは2004年新潟県中越地震震源地付近の第四紀後期の地殻変動について検討を進めている. 本稿では, 魚沼丘陵北部に分布する河成段丘層序の調査結果を速報し, さらに, 魚沼丘陵東縁の六日町盆地西縁断層の活動性に触れる. 調査地域に分布する河成段丘は, 空中写真判読調査により, 高位より, Hf, Mf, Lf面に区分される. さらに, Hf面はHf 1～3面に, Lf面は, Lf1～4面に細分される. 続いて, 火山灰層序に基づいてこれらの編年を行った.
