70歳以上のアキレス腱皮下断裂に対して，保存的加療を行い良好な成績を得た2例を報告する．【症例】症例は2例とも72歳の男性である．1人は猫を追いかけようとして，もう1人は側溝を踏み外して受傷した．ともに虚血性心疾患に対し，経皮的冠動脈インターベンションや冠動脈バイパス術の既往があり，抗凝固薬を内服中であった．うち1人は糖尿病の既往歴もあった．ともにギプス固定と装具を用いた保存的治療を行った．最終観察時，再断裂なく日常生活上問題ない．【考察】アキレス腱皮下断裂の治療は，保存的治療と手術療法に大別されるが，ともに甲乙つけがたいのは周知の事実である．患者に両者のメリット・デメリットを説明したところ，2人とも保存治療を選択した．その理由は，周術期合併症への危惧と日常生活レベルに戻れれば十分という高くないゴールであった．

海洋科学技術センターでは, 地球環境問題の調査のため, 1998年より深海巡航探査「うらしま」の開発に着手し, 2003年3月までに陸上試験, 水槽試験, ドック試験を終了した。2004年4月より「うらしま」は, 動力源にリチウムイオン2次電池を搭載し, 2002年までに最大深度潜航試験, 100Km長距離航行試験を行った。また, 2003年からは, 動力源として燃料電池を搭載し, 300Km長距離航行試験を目指して試験を行う予定である。本発表では, リチウムイオン2次電池を搭載した海上試験と燃料電池システムについて講演を行う。
