This article considers two instances of rapidly accelerating linguistic change in Glaswegian vernacular, th - fronting and l-vocalization , both typically associated with the Cockney dialect of London. Both changes have been underway for some time, but took off during the 1990s. In this article we consider a range of factors that are contributing to the rapid proliferation of these forms in the speech of inner-city Glaswegian adolescents. Our multivariate analysis shows very strong effects for linguistic ...

Miranda J. Banks,

During the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, feature and television writers turned to the digital sphere as a tactical strategy for representation, visibility, and promotion. While the growing interest in digital distribution was the impetus for this strike, it was also the medium that enabled writers to successfully communicate with each other, with the media industry, and with the general public. This article examines three major strategies deployed by WGA leadership during the strike ...

ABSTRACT ‘Busing’, in which students were transported by school buses to achieve court-ordered or voluntary school desegregation, became one of the nation's most controversial civil rights issues in the decades after Brown vs. Board of Education (1954). Focusing on Florida Governor Claude Kirk and Pontiac housewife activist Irene McCabe, this essay examines how busing opponents turned the conventions of television news – its emphasis on newsworthy events and crisis; its selective use of historical context; ...

This paper examines financing and investment structures in the film, television, and music industries of the People's Republic of China and Latin America. In both regions governments aspire to nurture high-value export-orientated creative sectors. Likewise, creators, producers, and distributors are increasingly targeting lucrative international markets, particularly culturally and linguistically proximate communities. However, while government policies can assist in domestic growth and in facilitating ...

Paul Wallin,

PERSONS reared in present day urban America are exposed to a number of experiences which contribute to their conception of marriage, and influence their evaluation of marriage as a relatively desirable or undesirable status for themselves. Most of these experiences are vicarious: exposure to the representations of marriage in print, movies, the radio and television. Less vicarious is the learning of the risks of marital failure as epitomized by the divorce rate. But marriage is also ...
