Syzygium aromaticum (clove) has been used as a dental analgesic, an anesthetic, and a bioreducing and capping agent in the formation of metallic nanoparticles. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect in oral microorganisms of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) formed with aqueous extract of clove through an ecofriendly method "green synthesis". The obtained AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis (ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy), SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscopy- ...

Aviation emissions from 2016 to 2050 could consume between 12% and 27% of the remaining carbon budget to keep global temperature rise below 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels. Consequently, aviation is being challenged to immediately start to reduce its in-sector emissions, then sharply reduce its CO2 emissions and fully decarbonize toward the second half of this century. Among the analyses carried out within the Horizon 2020 project PARE—Perspectives for Aeronautical Research in Europe, this paper ...

A gene encoding a multiepitope polypeptide (MEP) has been synthesized. It contains the information for (1) an 11-amino acid (aa) epitope from the C1 region of gp120 of HIV-1 and (2) 3 epitopes of 15 amino acids each, from the central part of the V3 loop of isolates MN, SC, and WMJII. These four segments are linked by the short spacer peptide AGGGA. This gene was cloned in a plasmid vector and expressed in Escherichia coli as a fusion product with a 62-aa fragment of human IL-2. The recombinant protein ...

Chemical oxidation using ozone in the presence of appropriate catalysts offers an attractive option for removing poorly biodegradable pollutants. However, the effect of such catalysts on ozone aqueous decomposition is not well documented. This study compares experimental results on ozone aqueous decomposition promoted by zeolite and volcanic sand. These are two low costs natural materials identified as suitable catalysts for heterogeneous ozonation. The effects of pH (2–8) and free radical scavengers ( ...

The joining of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) Martensitic type is being introduced in automotive industry; however, the optimization of the welding process is required to meet customer quality requirements. Two neural networks are built for modeling the relationship between the welding parameters and the output response of the process. An evolutionary algorithm is used for multi-objective optimization considering the neural networks as objective functions. The results consist of a set of solutions ...

SUMMARY Mesoamerica, Chocó and the tropical Andes are recognized as biodiversity hotspots where conservation action is urgently needed. Because World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) ecoregions are commonly used as the basis for conservation decisions, an understanding of WWF ecoregions’ environmental heterogeneity and their representation in current protected areas (PAs) is important for identifying priority areas for conservation. Thirteen environmental domain classifications based on 22 climatic ...

For the first time on the basis of direct observations (June 2003 and June 2005), the characteristics of the summer‐time coastal poleward current off SW Mexico are reported. Only the surface evidence of this coastal current has previously been described, from ship drift compilations. In June 2003 the current was 90–180 km wide, 400 m deep, with speed ∼0.3 ms −1 and transport ∼4 Sv (1 Sv = 10 6 m 3 s −1 ). In June 2005, its width was ∼90 km, it was 250–300 m deep, with mean speed ∼0.15 m s −1 and transport ∼2.5 ...

In this study, the influence of zeolite surface sites on the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is evaluated. Chilean natural zeolite of mordenite kind (86% mordenite, and 14% quartz) is used as a parent material. It is chemically modified using hydrochloric acid (2.4 mol dm−3) and thermally out-gassed at 550 °C. Textural characteristics are determined by nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. Acid–base properties of mordenite surface sites are assessed by temperature-programmed desorption, using ...

Today, aviation is immersed in a shift from old-fashioned reactive and compliance-based safety approaches towards proactive and performance-based methods and tools. Stakeholders have to monitor, gather and analyse safety-related data and information in order to anticipate and predict actual and emerging safety risks. The expected growth of air traffic in the following decades demands the implementation of new operational concepts to avoid current limitations of the air traffic management system. This paper focuses on the strategic conflict management for four-dimensional trajectories (4DT) in free-route airspace. 4DT has been proposed as the future operational concept to manage air traffic. Thus, aircraft must fulfil temporary restrictions at specific waypoints in the airspace based on time windows. Based on ...

Abstract Civil aviation has a longstanding tradition of investigating accidents and reporting incidents, which contributes to making aviation one of the safest forms of transport. To make flying safer, independent investigation into accidents is essential as it the surest way of identifying the causes of an accident and answering the fundamental questions “What really happened?” and “What can be done to prevent similar incidents in the future?”. The obligation to investigate accidents is enshrined ...

These biochemical and ...

To achieve this, six male cats were implanted with electrodes on the left vagal nerve and submitted to 15 rounds of 23 h continuous sleep recordings in three categories: baseline (BL), ...

Profilins are ubiquitous actin‐, polyproline‐, and inositol phospholipid‐binding proteins, which in plants are encoded by multigene families.
