To evaluate the protective effect of remote ischemic per-conditioning in ischemia and reperfusion-induced renal injury.Fifteen rats (Rattus norvegicus) were randomized into three groups (n = 5): Group Normality (GN), Control Ischemia and Reperfusion (GIR) and Group remote ischemic per-conditioning (GPER). With the exception of the GN group, all others underwent renal ischemia for 30 minutes. In group GPER we performed the ischemic remote per-conditioning, consisting of three cycles of ischemia and reperfusion ...

Background Remote ischemic perconditioning (rPER) is the newest technique described to mitigate ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury. Local postconditioning (POS) is also an effective technique for this purpose. It is uncertain if adding local POS to rPER provides superior liver protection, so we tested this hypothesis. Materials and methods Twenty five Wistar rats were assigned into five groups: sham, IR, POS, rPER, and rPER + POS. Animals were subjected to liver ischemia for 60 min. POS consisted of ...

ABSTRACT Neuropathic pain is a chronic syndrome that is difficult to treat and often affects patients with leprosy. Recommended treatment includes the the use of analgesic drugs, codeine, tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptics, anticonvulsants and thalidomide, but without consensus on uniform dose and fully satisfactory results. Objective: To analyze botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) effectiveness in treatment of chronic neuropathic pain in refractory leprous patients, as well as evaluate and compare ...

Flies have been implicated in the dispersal of medically important bacteria including members of the genus Klebsiella between different environmental compartments. The aim of this study was to retrieve and characterize antibiotic-resistant bacteria from flies collected near to hospitals.Flies were collected in the vicinity of medical facilities and examined for bacteria demonstrating phenotypic resistance to ceftriaxone, followed by determination of phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles. ...

The Wilson's Plover (Charadrius wilsonia) is widely distributed along the coast of the Americas. We present the first reproductive record in Baía de Todos os Santos, Brazil, broadening the southernmost limit of its breeding area along the Atlantic Coast to 12° 44′ S, 38° 45′ W. We recorded a family with a subadult in 2007, and a family with chicks and a nest in 2008. The female invested more time in incubation than the male in 96 hrs of diurnal nest observations. The biocidal activity of three strains of Brevibacillus laterosporus upon the post-embryonic developmental stages of Chrysomya megacephala was evaluated. Bioassays were performed to verify lethal and sub-lethal effects including ultra-structural changes in the midgut. Among the strains assayed, Shi3 presented the highest larval mortality rates, achieving 70% at a concentration of 1×108 spores/g of diet. Transmission electron microscopy revealed intestinal alterations caused by all strains tested. ...

Vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing more than one million deaths annually. Malaria remains one of the most important public health problems worldwide. These vectors are bloodsucking insects, which can transmit disease-producing microorganisms during a blood meal. The contact of culicids with human populations living in malaria-endemic areas suggests that the identification of Plasmodium genetic material in the blood present in the gut of these mosquitoes ...

INTRODUCTION: Musca domestica is resistant to many insecticides; hence, biological control is a suitable alternative. METHODS: We evaluated the lethality of strain Btk176 towards the larval and adult M. domestica and the histopathological effects in the larvae midgut. RESULTS: We observed 99% larval and 78.9% adult mortality within 48 hours of spore ingestion (dosage, 2.4×108 CFU/ml). The histopathological effects were consistent with cytotoxicity. PCR analysis showed the presence of the cry1Ba gene. ...

Antimalarial drugs with novel modes of action and wide therapeutic potential are needed to pave the way for malaria eradication. Violacein is a natural compound known for its biological activity against cancer cells and several pathogens, including the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum (Pf). Herein, using chemical genomic profiling (CGP), we found that violacein affects protein homeostasis. Mechanistically, violacein binds Pf chaperones, PfHsp90 and PfHsp70-1, compromising the latter's ATPase ...

Ischemia and reperfusion is a very frequently phenomenon that is presented in many clinical situations like in liver transplantation as well as in traumatic situation of these organs. One way of minimizing this injury is the remote ischemic perconditioning, described in myocardial ischemia, in which brief nonlethal cycles of ischemia and reperfusion of the arm or leg are applied remotely during index ischemia. Therefore, this current study aims to compare the effects of perconditioning and postconditioning ...

Background Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency greatly hinders Plasmodium vivax malaria radical cure and further elimination due to 8-aminoquinolines-associated hemolysis. Although the deleterious health effects of primaquine in G6PD deficient individuals have been known for over 50 years, G6PD testing is not routinely performed before primaquine treatment in most P . vivax endemic areas. With at least 28 elective million operations delayed during the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of patients who will require surgery after a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection is likely to increase rapidly1. Operating on patients with an active perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection is now known to carry a very high pulmonary complication and mortality rate2. Urgent information is needed to guide whether postponing surgery in patients with a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to ...
