This work evaluated the efficiency of Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE) and Pressurized Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (P-NaDESs) under different temperatures (100, 120, 140 and 160 °C) in obtaining pectin from Passion Fruit Rinds (PFR) and its residual biomass (PFR - UAPLE), and compare the results with those of Conventional Extraction (CE). The highest pectin yields, 19.1 and 27.6 %, were achieved using P-NaDES (Citric Acid:Glucose:Water) at 120 °C for PFR and its PFR-UAPLE, respectively. Regarding the Degree ...

Ultrasound-Assisted Pressurized Liquid Extraction (UAPLE) and Nanofiltration (NF) were performed in 70% ethanol to recover and concentrate bioactive compounds from passion fruit rinds. Polyamide Thin-Film Composite membranes with nominal MWCO between 150 and 300 Da provided good retention of phenolic compounds (74–89%) and antioxidant capacity (84–96%) with a maximum mass concentration factor 1.4. The membrane surface showed particle deposition and fouling after filtration using AFM, SEM and FTIR, resulting ...

The circular economy (CE) has become a trend because concern has arisen regarding the end of life of several products and the reduction of CO2 emissions in many processes. Since the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is one of the biggest generators of environmental impacts, there is a need to apply the CE concept to the industry in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the role of different tools that are used to integrate CE strategies to reduce GHG emissions ...

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition featured by motor dysfunction, death of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and accumulation of α-synuclein (αSyn) aggregates. Growing evidence suggests that PD diagnosis happens late in the disease progression and that the pathology may originate much earlier in the enteric nervous system (ENS) before advancing to the brain, via autonomic fibers. It was recently described that a specific cell type from the gut epithelium named enteroendocrine ...

The gut microbiota influence neurodevelopment, modulate behavior, and contribute to neurodegenerative disorders. Several studies have consistently reported a greater abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila in Parkinson disease (PD) fecal samples. Therefore, we investigated whether A.muciniphila-conditioned medium (CM) could initiate α-synuclein (αSyn) misfolding in enteroendocrine cells (EEC) — a component of the gut epithelium featuring neuron-like properties. We found that A. muciniphila CM composition ...

Investigation of Crack Intensity Factor is essential as it affects the mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of soils. Soil water coming from the wet seasons or from the water table, is removed by evaporation during the driest season. The loss of water provokes a significant increase in suction. When it exceeds the tensile strength of the soil, cracks occur that can modify the mechanical and mainly hydraulic properties of the soil, creating preferred paths for water infiltration. Little research is ...

Segment Routing (SR) is a new fertile ground for Traffic Engineering (TE). By decomposing forwarding paths into segments, which specify a list of intermediate delivery points that a packet must visit on its way to the final destination, SR improves TE tasks and enables new solutions for the optimization of network resource utilization. This work proposes an Evolutionary Computation approach that enables Path Computation Element (PCE), or Software-defined Network (SDN) controllers, to optimize SR configurations ...

Decarbonization of the energy sector is a topic of paramount importance to avoid irreversible global warming. Hydrogen has been considered as the most suitable option to replace fossil fuels in industrial, residential and transport applications. Catalytic methane decomposition consists of the low-temperature cracking ...
