The cross section variation, mechanical properties and moisture absorption of vegetable sisal fibres compressed at temperatures of 120, 160 and 200 °C were determined and compared with values obtained in non-compressed fibres. The thermo-mechanical treatment carried out resulted in a relevant increasing of fibre stiffness (elastic modulus) and decreasing of fibre moisture absorption.

The influence of the matrix formulation and different amounts of synthetic fiber on physical and mechanical performance of asbestos free fiber cement was evaluated. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was tested as reinforcement in combination with mechanical and kraft cellulose pulps. Silica-fume, metakaolin and fly ash were used as pozzolanic additions in proportions up to ∼14% by mass in combination with ordinary Portland cement and carbonatic filler. Bulk densities of composites varied from 1.5 to 1. ...

A comparative study of the microstructure of both new and in-use aged blast-furnace slag cement coir reinforced composite was performed. Aged samples came from internal and external walls of a 12-year-old house, built in São Paulo. The panels of the house were produced using 1:1.5:0.504 (binder: sand: water, by mass) mortar reinforced with 2% of coir fibre by volume. The binder was blast-furnace slag activated by 2% of lime and 10% of gypsum. Fibres were removed from the composite and subsequently ...

Vegetable fibres, which are widely available in most developing countries, can be used as convenient materials for brittle matrix reinforcement, even though they present relatively poor durability performance. Taking into account the fibres mechanical properties, with an adequate mix design, it is possible to develop a material with suitable properties for building purposes. In order to improve the durability of vegetable fibres, this paper presents the approach adopted in the research which is ...

The transition zone of short filament fibres randomly dispersed in a paste of ordinary Portland cement was analysed. Composites with vegetable fibres (malva, sisal and coir) were compared with those with chrysotile asbestos and polypropylene fibres. The composites were prepared for testing at the ages of 7, 28, 90 and 180 days. The water-cement ratio was 0.38; at the age of 28 days specimens with wc = 0.30 and a wc = 0.46 were also tested. Mechanical tests evaluated the composite tensile strength and ...

The durability of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (uPVC) components used in the building industry is a function of the interaction of several factors. Types and quantities of additives incorporated to the PVC resin and defining the formulation of the PVC compound used in the production of these components are among the most important such factors. White uPVC window profiles with different formulations have been exposed to five years of natural weathering under Brazilian climatic conditions. Results ...

The development of Engineering is of utmost importance for the growth of the country. The search for more interaction between university and industry for innovation has been increasing during recent years. For this purpose the Professional Master’s Degree (MP) can be an important tool. Joint research projects aim at promoting the competitiveness of the Brazilian companies in a globalized world. This paper presents the importance of graduate studies on Engineering and the cooperation between the university ...

This works analyses the financial performance of the University of São Paulo over recent years. First, we discuss the current financing model of the institution; established in 1989 and based upon the autonomy provided by the government. This model, with stable and increasingly gradual income, has allowed for a better planning of its expansion. Then, the data regarding financial performance of the past few years are presented, showing that the income has increased. However, expenditure has increased ...
