The fish fauna of urban streams is still poorly known, it difficult to assess the effects of urbanization expansion on fish species composition, for this reason the aim of this study was to provide a checklist of species that compose the ichthyofauna of six urban streams, tributaries to the Vermelho River, upper Paraguay River Basin, Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The samples were performed with seine nets on a spatial gradient of 75 m, and with sieves for a period of 15 minutes in each ...

Free-floating plants are important components of aquatic ecosystems in tropical climates, playing a key role in the structure and spatial distribution of fish communities. This study aims at elucidating the potential effects of free-floating vegetation on fish community structure in a tropical floodplain lake, using an experimental approach based on natural and artificial devices (Eichhornia crassipes), in high and low (LT) turbidity waters. A total of 32 fish species were found, richness, abundance, ...

Eosinophilic granuloma is a benign, self-limited condition most commonly seen in children around 10 years of age. There is no known cause concerning its etiology. The lesion is usually solitary and can involve the whole vertebral body with massive destruction and vertebral collapse ('coin lesion') but this appearance is not pathognomonic. Vertebral collapse may lead to neurological symptoms that might be severe. We describe two cases of eosinophilic granuloma, in which the patients have thoracic pain, ...

There is controversy regarding which imaging method is best for identifying early degenerative alterations in intervertebral discs. No correlations between such methods and histological finds are presented in the literature. The aim of this study was to correlate the thickness of intervertebral discs measured on simple radiographs with the degree of degeneration seen on magnetic resonance images and the histological findings relating to nerve ends inside the discs.

Background Differential methylation activity of the human rDNA in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has been demonstrated by classic cytogenetic tools, indicating a decrease in rRNA gene expression. Methylation of CpGs is an important epigenetic mechanism involved in gene expression repression of tandem repeating genes during ageing. Thus, rDNA specific methylation pattern could be involved in AD and be used as a marker of the disease or of its progression. Methods The methylation pattern of three ...

Adenosine has been proposed as an endogenous anticonvulsant which can play an important role in seizure initiation, propagation and arrest. Besides the release of adenosine per se, the ectonucleotidase pathway is an important metabolic source of extracellular adenosine. A TiO2@Silica nanoparticle has been introduced in a random laser. TiO2 particles with an average diameter of 0.41 μm were coated with silica shells of different thicknesses. Strong dependency of silica shell thickness on the medium scattering strength was found. A mathematical relationship between the scattering mean free path, random laser threshold, and random laser efficiency was developed. Higher efficiency, lower laser threshold, narrower bandwidth, and longest photobleaching lifetime were ...

There has been growing interest in scattering media in recent years, due to their potential applications as solar collectors, photocatalyzers, random lasers and other novel optical devices. Here, we have introduced a novel core-shell scattering medium for a random laser composed of TiO2@Silica nanoparticles. Higher efficiency, lower laser threshold and long photobleaching lifetime in random lasers were demonstrated. This has introduced a new method or parameter (fraction of absorbed pumping), which ...

Abstract Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurological disease that affects the motor system. The associated motor symptoms are muscle rigidity or stiffness, bradykinesia, tremors, and gait disturbances. The correct diagnosis, especially in the initial stages, is fundamental to the life quality of the individual with PD. However, the methods used for diagnosis of PD are still based on subjective criteria. As a result, the objective of this study is the proposal of a method for the discrimination ...

Condition factors of males were higher than those of females and size at first sexual maturity ( L 50 ) was 12·8 cm for females and 11·8 cm for males. The relative frequency of mature specimens and gonad condition indices indicate that the breeding season is short and coincides with the rainy season.
