In Brazil, the first major invasion event of Bemisia tabaci was that of Middle East–Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) species, formerly termed as B biotype, which commenced in the 1990s mainly by ornamental plants in São Paulo State. More than two decades after this invasion, the presence of the Mediterranean (MED) species of B. tabaci, formerly Q biotype, was reported in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost State of Brazil, and now in São Paulo and Paraná States, in southeastern Brazil. Specimens of whiteflies ...

This work reports, for the first time, the association of electrochemical paper analytical devices (ePADs) with batch injection analysis (BIA) systems. The novel 3D-printed BIA cell utilized here is semi-transparent (3D-printed by SLA/DLP technology), while the three-electrode paper device was fabricated by pencil drawing. This ePAD/3D-BIA platform was employed for the amperometric detection of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first BIA method for determining this ...

Here, a novel electrically conductive thermoplastic material composed of graphite/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (G/ABS) is reported for the first time. This material was explored on the production of 3D printing-based electrochemical sensors with enhanced sensitivity using a novel fabrication approach. The developed G/ABS electrodes showed lower charge transfer resistance (157 vs. 3279 Ω), higher electroactive area (0.61 vs. 0.19 cm2) and peak currents ca. 69% higher when compared with electrodes ...

The complex evolution of primate color vision has puzzled biologists for decades. Primates are the only eutherian mammals that evolved an enhanced capacity for discriminating colors in the green–red part of the spectrum (trichromatism). However, while Old World primates present three types of cone pigments and are routinely trichromatic, most New World primates exhibit a color vision polymorphism, characterized by the occurrence of trichromatic and dichromatic females and obligatory dichromatic males. ...

The inhibitory effect of Bauhinia purpurea (Fabaceae) extract was studied in the corrosion of carbon steel in 1.0 mol∙L-1 sulfuric acid solution. This plant was collected from the Brazilian rainforest. The carbon steel protection was observed by varying the extract concentration from 50 to 500 mg∙L-1. Polarization curves revealed that this extract acted as an adsorption inhibitor decreasing both anodic and cathodic density currents. Weight loss measurements showed that the extract remains stable ...

The search for techniques and materials able to improve structure quality and durability has lead to research some methods that are able to measure the transfer properties of composites. Cement type has an important influence on mortar performance, and chemical and physical deteriorations modify microstructure, and thereby transfer properties. The aim of this work is to evaluate two methods which can measure the transfer properties of cement based materials: capillary absorption and air permeability ...

Abstract This paper describes the development of a novel, simple, and inexpensive electrochemical device containing an integrated and disposable three‐electrode system for detection. The base of this platform consists on a PDMS structure containing microchannels which were prototyped using 3D‐printed molds. Pencil graphite leads were inserted into these microchannels and utilized as working, counter and reference electrodes in a novel design. Morphological analysis and electrochemical experiments ...

β-Caryophyllene (β-CP) is a bioactive sesquiterpene abundant in copaiba oil-resin (COR), which is widely used in Brazilian folk medicine; however, its instability due to the presence of unsaturations is an obstacle to the use of COR in its natural form. Therefore, the development of a system for β-CP delivery, like the one proposed herein for the first time, may protect it and preserve its therapeutic action. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were constructed in this study to obtain COR-containing nanocarriers. ...

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii that affects reproductive performance in small ruminants. Although the T. gondii life cycle is well understood since 1960s, several aspects related to its infection remain unclear. In the present study we hypothesized that sheep inseminated with T. gondii-contaminated semen would develop toxoplasmosis. In order to test that hypothesis, 41 sheep were experimentally infected with semen spiked with the organism. Females were divided in ...

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) located in the first intron of the human IFN-γ gene can putatively influence the secretion of cytokine with an impact on infection outcome as demonstrated for tuberculosis and other complex diseases. Our aim was to investigate the putative association of IFNG+874T/A SNP with American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) and also the influence of this ...
