A denitrifying consortium was used as inoculum to form a biofilm in horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor. The reactor was fed with hydrocarbons, separately (benzene at 13.8, 15.4 and 26.5 mg/L; toluene 30.8 mg/L; ethylbenzene 33.3 mg/L; xylene 32.1 mg/L), and also with a benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) mix solution of approximately 5.0 mg/L of each hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbons were dissolved in a solution containing ethanol. Organic matter removal efficiencies were ...

The increasing use of pharmaceutical products also increases their release in aquatic environment. These contaminants are considered emerging pollutants, and induce adverse ecological and human health effects. The antidiabetic metformin is one example that has been detected in the aquatic environment at unusual concentrations. This fact indicates that conventional wastewater treatment is inefficient on eliminating this compound. Here we show that metformin can be effectively removed from water by ...

Abstract The search for biodegradable materials motivated the development of new materials for the food industry. Biomaterials (pectin, starch, and chitosan) are considered promising biodegradable polymers for developing or improving materials. This study aimed to develop biodegradable bionanocomposite films with neem oil and carnauba wax nanoemulsion using pectin (high methyl esterification) polymer matrix; and to evaluate the nanoemulsions effects on the water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical, ...

Contamination of water with metallic ions and dyes leads to several impacts on the environment and human health. The adsorption comes as an economic and simple process to remove these pollutants from water. The use of residues as adsorbents can make the process even more sustainable and cheaper. This work proposes the use of a solid residue (eggshells) as an adsorbent of dyes - Reactive Blue 198 (RB) and Direct Black 22 (DB) - and metallic ions (Cd2+ and Cr3+). The solid was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, ...

Expansins refer to a family of closely related non-enzymatic proteins found in the plant cell wall that are involved in the cell wall loosening. In addition, expansins appear to be involved in different physiological and environmental responses in plants such as leaf and stem initiation and growth, stomata opening and closing, reproduction, ripening and stress tolerance. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the main crops grown worldwide. Lignocellulosic biomass from sugarcane is one of the most ...

Spiking with 18-crown-6/trifluoracetic acid is shown to sequester metal cations thus eliminating unwanted [TAG+Na]+ and [TAG+K]+ ions whereas favoring analyte detection as sole [TAG+H]+ ions in the ESI(+)-MS analysis of methanolic solutions of soybean oil. This sequestering eliminates ion splitting and its resulting isobaric interferences, thus increasing spectra quality greatly facilitates analyte identification. This "one ion per analyte relationship" is highly beneficial for direct infusion analysis ...

In this paper, we show that chitosan may induce conformation changes in silk fibroin (SF) in layer-by-layer (LbL) films, which were used as matrix for immobilization of the enzyme phytase to detect phytic acid. Three chitosan (CH) samples possessing distinct molecular weights were used to build CH/SF LbL films, and a larger change in conformation from random coils to β-sheets for SF was observed for high molecular weight chitosan (CHH). The CHH/SF LbL films deposited onto interdigitated gold electrodes ...

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious clinical condition which early and accurate diagnosis may contribute to the reduction of associated morbidity and mortality. VTE occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) blocks the vein blood flow causing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and, when it migrates to the lungs, it may clog the pulmonary arteries characterizing pulmonary embolism (PE). Analysis using fibrin degradation products or D-dimer and coagulation factor VIII may assist early diagnosis of VTE. Thus, two ...
