Concurrent programs that are free of unsynchronized accesses to shared data may still exhibit unpredictable concurrency errors, called atomicity violations, which include both high-level data races and stale-value errors. Atomicity violations occur when programmers make wrong assumptions about the atomicity scope of a code block, incorrectly splitting it in two or more atomic blocks and allowing them to be interleaved with other atomic blocks. In this paper we propose a novel static analysis algorithm ...

Given the importance of interest rates risk in the banking industry, we study the success of banks interest rate hedging practices from 1980-2003. Using a sample of 371 banks, we investigate how well managers forecast interest rate movements by managing their own duration gaps. We also extend Flannery et al. (1984) factor model and recommend additional factors (slope, credit spread, foreign exchange and convexity) to explain bank stock returns. The major finding is that on average managers are not ...

Invasive alien species have taken the place of native forest species worldwide, and particularly in island systems like the Azores. Species distribution models could be used to support the design of control strategies, including the definition of target areas. In this study we used species distribution modelling, performed with the ecological-niche factor analysis (ENFA) approach. Pittosporum undulatum is the most widespread woody invader in the Azores where it is considered as one of the priority ...

Pittosporum undulatum Ventenat (Pittosporaceae) is a tree or shrub native to Australia introduced in the Azores Islands in the 19th century, presently naturalized in the nine islands. According to a random survey of vascular plants in the Azores, the invader is present throughout the archipelago, in 62% of 547 1-km2 samples. It was found in pure or mixed stands, forming groups and also as isolated trees. P. undulatum was frequently found in native scrubland (62%), mixed woodland (39%) and hedgerows ( ...

Programmes of education for sustainable development are important to reformulate and revise educational programmes in Sustainable Agriculture. Higher education institutes emerge as learning places to integrate sustainable development into the educational system, through graduation and MSc programmes, to provide a more effective response to the higher environmental and agriculture concerns. The aim of this study was to identify the best practices to be included in a MSc programme of education for ...

Abstract Selection and scaling of ground motion records have been recognised as one of the major sources of bias and uncertainty in the seismic assessment of civil engineering structures. This review paper provides a comprehensive description from a critical point of view of the scaling and selection approaches of earthquake motions for structural engineering applications, emphasising works conducted in the last decade. The outline of content within this review is organised as follows: (1) Earlier ...

The past years have witnessed an increasing interest and concern regarding the development of security monitoring and management mechanisms for Critical Infrastructures, due to their vital role in ensuring the availability of many essential services. This task is not easy due to the specific characteristics of such systems, and the natural resistance of Critical Infrastructures operators against actions implying downtime. Digital Twins, as accurate virtual models of physical objects or processes, ...

This paper presents a sustainable strategy for improving the capture of antibodies by affinity chromatography. A novel biomimetic ligand (4‐((4‐chloro‐6‐(3‐hydroxyphenoxy)‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)oxy)naphthalen‐1‐ol) (TPN‐BM) was synthesized using a greener and simple protocol to overcome solubility limitations associated with ligand 22/8, known as artificial protein A. Furthermore, its subsequent immobilization on chitosan‐based monoliths induced by plasma surface activation allowed the design of a fast ...

Heart failure (HF) triggered by cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular diseases is a leading cause of death worldwide and translational research is urgently needed to better understand the mechanisms of the failing heart. For this purpose, rodent models of heart disease combined with in vivo cardiac functional assessment have provided valuable insights into the physiological significance of a given genetic or pharmacological modification. In small animals, cardiac function and structure can be evaluated ...

Heteroaromatic compounds, such as thiophenes, pyrroles and furans, were acylated using zeolite Beta, with and without modifications, and acetic anhydride. Amenable conditions were found to carry out these acylations in high yield, sometimes in a very short time (10 min). Indium modified catalyst have provided a way of attaining good yields in the acylation of pyrrole.

Although mainland Portugal has been spared from large magnitude earthquakes in recent years, it faces a threat due to the presence of several active fault systems. In such a framework, Portuguese pre-code masonry construction is believed to be the most vulnerable in the existing building stock. Given the lack of information on earthquake damage to this stock, the use of detailed numerical models is a viable strategy to comprehend its seismic behavior. This paper provides an updated fragility characterization ...

The recent emergence of a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, has had major public health and economic consequences. Although 61,888 confirmed cases were reported in Brazil by 28 April 2020, little is known about the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in this country. Meteorological conditions play a major influence on the indoor conditions of buildings, especially in southern European countries, where the hygrothermal requirements are systematically neglected, on contrast to northern European countries. The use of biomass for energy production has shown a growing interest in recent years. Pittosporum undulatum is a widespread invasive tree in the Azores archipelago with a considerable potential as an energy resource. An extended outbreak of mycobacterial surgical infections occurred in Brazil during 2004-2008. Most infections were caused by a single strain of Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii, which was characterized by a specific rpoB sequevar and two highly similar pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns differentiated by the presence of a ∼50 kb band. The nature of this band was investigated.
