The nonlinear behavior of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) driven unstable by energetic ions in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1560 (1994)] is studied. The evolution of instabilities can take on several scenarios: a single mode or several modes can be driven unstable at the same time, the spectrum can be steady or pulsating, and there can be negligible or anomalous loss associated with the instability. This paper presents a comparison between experimental results and recently ...

We introduce a statistical methodology for clustering analysis of seismicity in the time-space-energy domain and use it to establish the existence of two statistically distinct populations of earthquakes: clustered and nonclustered. This result can be used, in particular, for nonparametric aftershock identification. The proposed approach expands the analysis of Baiesi and Paczuski [Phys. Rev. The stability of low‐frequency drift magnetosonic waves in the nightside magnetosphere between the outer ring current and the distant neutral line is investigated. As low‐frequency Pi2 oscillations are seen before, during, and after substorm onset, these compressional waves are important for understanding the connection between the two substorm onset mechanisms of (1) the near geosynchronous orbit (NGO) mechanism and (2) the near‐Earth neutral line (NENL) mechanism. It is found that there are two different ...

Kinetic theory is used to investigate the stability of ballooning interchange modes in the high‐pressure geotail plasma. A variational form of the stability problem is used to compare new kinetic stability results with MHD, fast MHD, and Kruskal and Oberman [1958] stability results. Two types of drift modes are analyzed: A kinetic ion pressure gradient drift wave with a frequency given by the ion diamagnetic drift frequency ω * pi and a very low frequency mode |ω| ≪ ω * pi , ω Di that is often called a convective ...

The local flux surface stability of magnetic dipole configurations is investigated in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and drift frequency regimes. Solutions of the plasma equations in the very high beta limit are discussed. A novel procedure is developed for discussing stability in terms of the frequency ratio: the orbit averaged ion drift frequency divided by the ion diamagnetic frequency. This procedure is used to examine the stability of magnetospheric flux surfaces in the neighborhood of the equatorial ...

Critical conditions for the onset of fast interchange dynamics in the stressed geotail during the growth phase of the substorm are derived. We compare the ideal MHD interchange stability condition [ Hurricane , 1997] with that for kinetically modified interchange‐ballooning motions. It is shown that fast interchange growth is possible only in the near‐Earth boundary of the plasma sheet where the local plasma pressure‐to‐magnetic pressure ratio (beta) is near unity since compressibility stabilizes the ...

The linear growth rates of TAE (toroidal Alfvén eigenmode) modes destabilized by ICRF (ion cyclotron range of frequency) heating are calculated over a range of plasma parameters. Nonlinear saturation of a single unstable mode is investigated both analytically and numerically when wave–particle trapping is the dominant saturation mechanism. A numerical code has been developed based on a reduced resonance description of the wave–particle interaction (using a Hamiltonian formalism). A delta-f algorithm ...

A method is presented for predicting the saturation levels and particle transport in weakly unstable systems with a discrete number of modes. Conditions are established for either steady-state or pulsating responses when several modes are excited for cases where there is and there is not resonance overlap. The conditions for saturation and the associated transport are discussed. Depending on parameters, the saturation level can be low, with only a small fraction of the available free energy released ...

A quasi-linear model is developed to produce realistic self-consistent saturation levels when modes do not overlap, and give self-consistent diffusion and wave evolution when modes do overlap. Both regimes give steady or pulsating behaviour in weakly driven systems with classical relaxation and background dissipation present. An avalanche response is demonstrated: wave momentum release caused by the overlap of closely spaced modes can produce mode overlap of more widely spaced modes (a domino effect) ...

The linear stability of sideband modes for a one-dimensional free electron laser is investigated in detail. The dependence on wiggler taper, slippage between optical pulse and electrons, and trapped electron distribution functions are included in the analysis. Nyquist plots are used to delineate the parameter space in which sideband instabilities occur and approximate analytic expressions for the linear growth rate are derived. In special cases a complete analytic solution is given. Essentially ...

A hot plasma component formalism is used for a symmetric tandem mirror cell to relate the precessional mode, well known from Astron experiments, to more standard magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes. The l=1 mode can be stabilized by conducting walls, while the higher l modes can be stabilized by finite Larmor radius. Such a configuration is free of remnant dissipative instabilities because all perturbations are positive energy excitations when stability is achieved. OFF

The transformation to guiding center variables is accomplished by a sequence of canonical transformations. The kinetic equation is determined by Liouville’s equation. This equation is then ordered in accordance with the gyrokinetic ordering, and analyzed order by order to obtain the linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic equations.

An unneutralized rigidly rotating electron beam is absolutely stable if the distribution function is a monotonically decreasing function of H0 −ωLLz and if (ρBωl/c) < 1, where HO and Lz are the single-particle energy and canonical angular momentum, ωL is the angular velocity, and ρB is the radius of an enclosing infinitely conducting cylindrical wall.

For ω≫ωB = (k02e∅0/me)1/2, the normal modes are essentially oscillations of the background plasma and these can be made unstable due to coupling to the periodic motion of the trapped electrons with bound frequency ωb, where ω = nωb and n is an integer. However, the most unstable waves have frequency ω∼ωB, and in this regime, plasma oscillations with wave number k + k0 and k − k0, where k≪k0, are coupled; instability is associated with coupling due to resonant and nonresonant interaction with the trapped ...

H. Vernon Wong,

When electrons drift relative to ions across a magnetic field, the field-free instabilities can still persist. However, new possibilities for collective instabilities occur. In particular, an electrostatic instability with growth rate γ ∼ (me/mi)1/4Ωe can develop when ωpe ≫ Ωe, Te > Ti, and the electron drift velocity is less than the electron thermal velocity. This is due to the coupling of a Doppler-shifted ion mode and the electron cyclotron mode.

We consider semi-quantitatively the cyclotron resonance instability of ion cyclotron and magnetosonic waves propagating at an angle to the magnetic field in an infinite uniform plasma. The velocity distributions of electrons and ions consist of a dense cold component and a diffuse high-energy tail. If the high-energy protons are sufficiently intense and their pitch angle distributions sufficiently anisotropic, instability occurs for those waves propagating parallel to the magnetic field. If the ...

We present here a simple expression for the resonant particle growth rate of arbitrary plasma waves propagating at an arbitrary angle to a uniform magnetic field in a spatially homogeneous plasma. We then are able to see that cyclotron harmonic wave-particle resonances contribute to instability when the resonant particle pitch angle distributions are anisotropic, while the phase velocity resonances of the Landau form are unstable to beam type phenomena. A sufficient condition for resonant particle ...

The investigation of stabilization of hot particle drift reversed systems to low frequency modes has been extended to arbitrary hot beta βH, for systems that have unfavorable field-line curvature. Steep profile equilibria are considered where the thickness of the pressure drop Δ, is less than plasma radius rp. The analysis describes layer modes which have mΔ/rp <1, where m is the mode number, and radial structure larger than Δ. Stabilization is classified as either being ‘‘robust,’’ where all excitations ...

Plasmas heated by ICRF produce energetic particle distribution functions which are sharply peaked in pitch-angle, and we show that at moderate toroidal mode numbers, this anisotropy is a competitive and even dominant instability drive when compared with the universal instability drive due to spatial gradient. The universal drive, acting alone.destabilizes only co-propagating waves (i.e.waves propagating in the same toroidal direction as the diamagnetic flow of the energetic particles), but stabilizes ...
