This study showed, for the first time, the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by castor bean cake added to soil on the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita. Identification of nematotoxic volatiles increases the chance of identifying molecules for use in commercial nematicides.VOCs produced after the incorporation of castor bean cake in the soil resulted in immobility (>97.3%) and death (>96.9%) of M. incognita second-stage juveniles (J2) and reduction in M. incognita egg-hatch (> ...

Since volatiles do not leave residues in food and cause low toxicity to humans, they can act as a skeleton for new nematicidal molecules, once they have demonstrated activity against phytonematodes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by wood-associated fungi on controling second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita. All 28 wood-associated fungi isolates produced VOCs which caused in excess of 76 % immobility in exposed J2 of M. incognita. ...

The combination of biocontrol agents is a desirable strategy to improve control efficacy against the root-knot nematode (RKN) Meloidogyne incognita under field conditions. However, strains compatibility is generally tested in vitro and incompatible combinations are normally not further examined in experiments in planta. Therefore, there is virtually no information on the performance of incompatible strains. In this study, we evaluated two Bacillus strains previously described as incompatible in vitro ...

Several environmental pollutants, including pesticides, herbicides and persistent organic pollutants play an important role in the development of chronic diseases. However, most studies have examined environmental pollutants toxicity in target organisms or using a specific toxicological test, losing the real effect throughout the ecosystem. In this sense an integrative environmental risk of pollutants assessment, using different model organisms is necessary to predict the real impact in the ecosystem ...

The fungal genus Fonsecaea comprises etiological agents of human chromoblastomycosis, a chronic implantation skin disease. The current hypothesis is that patients acquire the infection through an injury from plant material. The present study aimed to evaluate a model of infection in plant and animal hosts to understand the parameters of trans-kingdom pathogenicity. Clinical strains of causative agents of chromoblastomycosis (Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Fonsecaea monophora) were compared with a strain ...

Simultaneous exposure of transplatin to polypeptides and DNA was mimicked by using a model peptide-oligonucleotide conjugate. Initially formed methionine-guanine chelates evolved into adducts with histidine-guanine trans-Pt(NH3)2 cross-links that differed in constitution and stability from those formed by reaction of the same conjugate with the anticancer drug cisplatin. This finding may be due to different capacities of the two diamminedichloroplatinum(II) complexes to interfere with biological ...

The reproductive efficiency of the herd is correlated with higher productivity in livestock. Reproduction biotechniques, such as ovulation synchronization protocols, are important to optimize production and accelerate genetic profit in beef and dairy herds. The objective of this review is to describe the evolution over the last 40 years of the artificial insemination (AI) and the timed-AI (TAI) protocols in cattle from a Brazilian perspective. TAI protocols are based on synchronizing emergence of ...

Summary The cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines , is a major pathogen of soybean in tropical regions, which demands novel sustainable management practices. In this work, the use of ethanol against H. glycines was evaluated as both a solution and a fumigant. On second-stage juveniles (J2) of H. glycines , ethanol at low concentration was more effective by direct dipping than by only fumigating the J2. Hatching was significantly reduced by direct dipping in ethanol solutions. Fumigation of H. glycines -infested ...

Summary Incorporation of castor bean cake into the soil results in the emission of four main compounds: skatole, γ -decalactone, 4-methylphenol and phenol. The toxic effects of these compounds on the life cycle of Meloidogyne incognita were studied here. Only phenol did not reduce hatching of M. incognita second-stage juveniles (J2) at any of the concentrations tested. The other compounds reduced J2 hatching by 42.1 to 59.3% at the highest concentrations. When J2 were immersed in Tween 80 ® solutions ...

Dissolution in water of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by microorganisms may explain, in part, the distribution of VOCs throughout the soil, and thus the process of exposure of plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) to these molecules. Water was exposed for short periods (0.5–24 h) to the VOCs emitted by Fusarium oxysporum strain 21 (Fo-21). Water exposed to VOCs caused 100% immobility in second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita. In addition, inoculation of J2 in tomato decreased infectivity ...

Nucleopeptides with no restriction in the amino acid composition can be synthesized using stepwise solid-phase methodology. Best conditions for the protection of arginine and cysteine, as well as for the final deprotection treatment are established, and our conclusions can be extended to the preparation of any peptide–oligonucleotide hybrid. The association between certain side reactions and nucleopeptide sequences is also discussed.
