In this study, the adsorption properties of synthetic zeolite produced from Brazilian coal fly ash were investigated for some heavy metal cations (Zn, Cu, Mn and Pb). The batch method has been employed, using metal concentrations in solution ranging from 100 to 3000 mg/l. Preliminary statistical analysis has indicated that temperature and time of synthesis of zeolites were the most important variables that affect the their adsorption capacity. Results lead to the conclusion that a hydrothermal treatment ...

Land use and climate change are expected to significantly alter hydrology and consequently electricity production in countries extremely dependent on their water resources, such as Brazil. Therefore, we used the large-scale hydrological model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), which we integrated with climate change and land use scenarios for the Tocantins-Araguaia Watershed (TAW) with a focus on energy production at the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Plant (THP) in the southeastern Amazon. We used daily ...

This paper describes a new computer approach for chemotaxonomic studies. The methodology employed enables the search for chemical substructures as taxonomic descriptors using an expert system built with plant natural products. The operation of the system was tested with diterpenes as taxonomic markers in Lamiaceae.

Considering the global concern of ciprofloxacin resistance, the aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of ciprofloxacin-resistant (CIP-R) Escherichia coli isolated from patients with community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Brasília, Brazil. CIP-R E. coli isolated from different outpatients between July 2013 and April 2014 in a tertiary hospital were analysed for antibiotic resistance profile, phylotype, uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) virulence genes, clonal relationship by ...

Abstract In Brazil, as much as 50% of the native tropical savannas and woodlands (known as the Cerrado) have been converted to farmland under intensive agriculture. Land cover change at this scale has important implications for water and energy budgets, but at present, these implications are poorly understood. A promising new technology for elucidating these relationships at large scales is remote sensing; but results obtained by this method need to be verified with ground‐based measurements. For ...

The aim of this work was to analyse extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli strains isolated from outpatients with signs of cystitis in Hospital Universitário de Brasília (Brasília, Brazil) during the period July 2013 to April 2014. E. coli isolated from urine culture were identified and their antibiotic susceptibility profile was determined by VITEK 2. ESBL-producing strains identified were submitted to PCR for Clermont phylotyping, CTX-M group typing and virulence determinant ...

It is known that fecal examination to detect Giardia lamblia cysts or trophozoites produces a high percentage of false-negative results. A commercially available immunoenzymatic assay (ProSpecT Giardia Microplate Assay, Alexon, Inc., BIOBRAS) to detect G. lamblia specific coproantigen was evaluated for the first time in Brazil. A total of 90 specimens were tested. Each specimen was first tested as unpreserved stool, and then it was preserved in 10% Formalin to be tested 2 months later. The assay ...

The paper attempts to discover an outline of the evolutionary trends of sesquiterpene lactones in angiosperms. The working method involves the quantification of skeletal specialization and oxidation state of the compounds and the assignment of evolutionary advancement indices, based on such data, to taxa. In the angiosperms as a whole, sesquiterpene lactone evolution proceeds by diversification of structural types and by amplification of the oxidation state of the molecules. The opposite trend appears ...

The two basic micromolecular phenomena which accompany the introduction of a novel lineage in angiosperms, vigorous increase in oxidation state of allelochemics and reduction of the number of major biosynthetic routes, are shown to characterize the evolutionary development of sesquiterpene lactones in tribes of Asteraceae.

Abstract Phytoalexin induction, so far reported mainly for cultivated plants, is applied to wild species of tropical environment. The phenomenon is strongly influenced by the experimental techniques. Application of the more common drop diffusate procedure results in the predominance of positive phytoalexin responses in cultivated (rather than in wild) species, while the facilitated diffusion procedure leads to comparable results for cultivated and wild species. Positive phytoalexin responses by both ...

Mild pancreatitis is a common complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic sphincterotomy. Knowing that a bolus injection of natural somatostatin (SRIF) dramatically reduces pancratic secretion, a study was conducted in 33 subjects undergoing invasive diagnostic procedures. A placebo (n = 16) or SRIF (n = 17; 4 µg/kg) were injected before cannulation. Enzymatic rise was observed in 16 (94 %) subjects receiving placebo and in 8 (50%) injected previously with SRIF. In the ...

Knowledge of evapotranspiration (ET) and water-use efficiency (WUE) is essential in crops management mainly in arid and semiarid regions where water resources are scarce for irrigation. Field experiments were conducted at a commercial farm to obtain the WUE and ET of mango orchard growth in a semiarid environment of northeastern region of Brazil. Measurements were performed within a randomly selected experimental plot with the spacing of 10 m × 5 m between rows and plants. Soil water balance method ...

Abstract Chagas disease is nowadays the most serious parasitic health problem. This disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi . The great number of deaths and the insufficient effectiveness of drugs against this parasite have alarmed the scientific community worldwide. In an attempt to overcome this problem, a model for the design and prediction of new antitrypanosomal agents was obtained. This used a mixed approach, containing simple descriptors based on fragments and topological substructural molecular ...

The carbohydrate-binding activity of the algal lectins from the closely related red marine algal species Bryothamnion triquetrum (BTL) and Bryothamnion seaforthii (BSL) was used to differentiate human colon carcinoma cell variants with respect to their cell membrane glyco-receptors. These lectins interacted with the cells tested in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the fluorescence spectra of both lectins clearly differentiated the cells used as shown by FACS profiles. Furthermore, as observed by ...

The available technology for tunnel kilns in Brazil is practically empirical and there is a lack of fundamental studies developed as an aid for the design of new kilns or for the retrofit of old ones. Here, a thermal model of a tunnel kiln is developed allowing the numerical simulation of kilns and dryers aiming toward a more efficient and less energy consuming design. The model is then systematically applied in the design of a new kiln to be used for firing clay tiles, bricks and similar products, ...

Antigenic extracts from five Leishmania stocks were used to vaccinate C57BL/10 mice. The Leishvacin(R) and PH8 monovalent vaccine yielded the highest IFN-gamma levels in the supernatants of spleen cell culture from vaccinated animals. Each single strain immunized group showed evidence of protective immunity six months after the challenge with promastigotes of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. No differences were detected between the vaccinated groups. It can be concluded that vaccines composed ...
