The increasing global human population is projected to reach 9.7 billion people by 2050. This population growth is currently linked to the trends of world-wide urbanization, growth of megacities and shifting dietary patterns. While humankind faces the daunting challenge of feeding and providing healthy lives for its teeming populations, urban agriculture holds promise for improving the quality of life in cities. Fortunately, policymakers and planners are accepting the need to support peri-urban ...

Motorized functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling is a rehabilitation therapy in which electrical stimulation is used to activate lower body muscles to pedal a cycle in conjunction with motorized assistance. FES cycling has been demonstrated to improve cardiovascular parameters, muscle mass, and motor control of people with neurological conditions (NCs). A common FES cycling objective is simultaneous cadence and power (torque) tracking; however, it is unclear how to best coordinate the FES ...

Tonsil motion was measured with cine MR imaging in patients clinically suspected of having Chiari I malformation. Cardiac-gated sagittal 2D fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (2D FIESTA) was performed in 11 patients with a Chiari I malformation and in 6 subjects without tonsil ectopia. Tonsil motion was measured through the cardiac cycle with a pixel-shift program designed for that purpose. Tonsil displacements in patients with Chiari I and those with normal cerebellar tonsils were compared. ...

Efficient retrieval of synaptic vesicles (SVs) is crucial to sustain synaptic transmission. Protein interacting with C-kinase 1 (PICK1) is a unique PDZ (postsynaptic density-95/disc-large/zona-occluden-1)- and BAR (Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs )-domain-containing protein that regulates the trafficking of postsynaptic glutamate receptors. It is also expressed in presynaptic terminals and is associated with the SVs; however, its role in regulating SV recycling remains unknown. Here, we show that PICK1 loss of function ...

The objective of this paper was to develop and test a novel control algorithm that enables stroke survivors to pedal a cycle in a desired cadence range despite varying levels of functional abilities after stroke.A novel algorithm was developed which automatically adjusts 1) the intensity of functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivered to the leg muscles, and 2) the current delivered to an electric motor. The algorithm automatically switches between assistive, uncontrolled, and resistive modes ...

Gregório Piaia,

“We have never done what we thought of doing long ago at Sens, when you wished to write a critical history of Philosophy and I a great mediaeval romance […]” (G. Flaubert, Sentimental Education, in The Complete Works (New York and London, 1904), 6/II, p. 326). With these words in the final pages of L’éducation sentimentale, the protagonist reminds his fellow student of the youthful plans they had made while still at college in the late 1830s. It may be surprising for us, accustomed as we are to postmodernism ...
