This study investigated the distribution and utilization of Mytella strigata in the Philippines thru site surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews. Initially reported in Manila Bay in 2014, results showed that this mussel species had spread to provinces mainly in the western and northern sections of Luzon Island. Interviews and focus groups revealed that Asian green mussel and oyster farming were affected by the non-indigenous species resulting in a reduction in harvest of farmed shellfish. ...

James R Bailey, V. Vince, Neil Williams, Tristan A. Cogan,

Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is mainly based on suppression of symptoms, often with numerous side effects. Trials of probiotics in IBD have frequently produced disappointing results. The majority of probiotics are unusual, since they do not require iron for growth, unlike many bacteria resident in the intestine. The IBD intestine is iron-rich due to bleeding and use of oral iron supplements; conventional probiotics would be rapidly outcompeted. We have evaluated an iron-responsive ...

We present optical (UBVJ), ultraviolet (FUV, NUV), and high-resolution atomic hydrogen (H i) observations of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD), VII Zw 403. We find that VII Zw 403 has a relatively high H i mass-to-light ratio for a BCD. The rotation velocity is nominally 10–15 km s−1, but rises to ∼20 km s−1 after correction for the ∼8–10 km s−1 random motions present in the gas. The velocity field is complex, including a variation in the position angle of the major axis going from the northeast to ...

We evaluated the utility of vitamin A and E profiles as biomarkers of contaminant exposure in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas; n=66) harvested by the Inuvialuit in the Beaufort Sea. Blubber was an important repository for these vitamins, accounting for 76.8±2.6% of the total body store of vitamin A, and 98.5±0.4% of total vitamin E. While the free alcohol form of vitamin A (retinol) appeared highly regulated, the vitamin A esters were influenced by several biological factors including age, body ...

Vaccination is the most effective means of influenza prevention. Efficacy of trivalent vaccines may be enhanced by including both B strain lineages. This phase 3, double-blind study assessed the immunogenicity and safety/tolerability of a quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV4) versus the United States (US)-licensed 2014-2015 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV3-Yamagata [IIV3-YAM]; Afluria) and IIV3 containing the alternate Victoria B strain (IIV3-VIC) in adults ≥18years.Participants ( ...

In addition to their capacity for template-directed 5′ → 3′ DNA synthesis at the polymerase (pol) site, DNA polymerases have a separate 3′ → 5′ exonuclease (exo) editing activity that is involved in assuring the fidelity of DNA replication. Upon misincorporation of an incorrect nucleotide residue, the 3′ terminus of the primer strand at the primer-template (P/T) junction is preferentially transferred to the exo site, where the faulty residue is excised, allowing the shortened primer to rebind to the template ...

Bipolar disorder is increasingly recognized as a significant source of psychiatric morbidity in children and adolescents. Younger bipolar patients symptomatically differ from adults, and frequently present with comorbid disorders, particularly attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The neurophysiological relationship between these two disorders, however, remains unclear. In this study we utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare activation patterns during performance ...

Solid-state photodecarbonylation is an attractive but underutilized methodology to forge hindered C–C bonds in complex molecules. This study discloses the use of this reaction to assemble the vicinal quaternary stereocenter motif present in bis(cyclotryptamine) alkaloids. Our strategy was enabled by experimental and computational investigations of the role of substrate conformation on the success or failure of the solid-state photodecarbonylation reaction. This informed a crystal engineering strategy ...
