The visible-infrared self-amplified spontaneous emission amplifier (VISA) free electron laser (FEL) is an experimental device designed to ... characterize the optical properties of the FEL radiation. VISA is designed to show how SASE FEL theory corresponds with experiment in this wavelength range, using an electron beam with emittance close to that planned for the future Linear Coherent Light Source at SLAC. VISA comprises a 4 m pure permanent magnet undulator with four 99 cm segments, each of 55 periods, 18 mm long. The undulator has distributed focusing built into it, to reduce the average beta function of the 70--85 MeV electron beam to about 30 cm. There are four ...

Among the six antimicrobial peptides used in this study, IP exhibited the lowest MIC90 values for both vancomycin-susceptible and -resistant S. aureus strains. The photoinduced electron transfer in differently linked zinc porphyrin-fullerene dyads and their free-base porphyrin analogues was studied in polar and nonpolar solvents with femto- to nanosecond absorption and emission spectroscopies. A new intermediate state, different from the locally excited (LE) chromophores and the complete charge-separated (CCS) state, was observed. It was identified as an exciplex. The exciplex preceded the CCS state in polar benzonitrile and the excited singlet state of ...

Both charge-transfer absorption and emission have been observed in porphyrin-linked fullerene where the C60 moiety is closely located on the porphyrin plane. Electron-transfer parameters including reorganization energies, free energy changes, and electronic coupling matrix elements were determined by analyzing the charge-transfer absorption and emission in benzene. The reorganization energy is estimated as 0.23 ± 0.11 eV, which is the smallest value among inter- and intramolecular donor−acceptor systems ...
