The cases of 6 patients who had ventricular wall rupture after isolated mitral valve replacement and were seen in our service are reviewed. In the first 2, the main lesion was mitral stenosis and calcification was severe. Injury to the ventricular myocardium during removal of the valve was the causative factor in 1 and the most likely explanation in the other. In the other 4 patients, the dominant lesion was insufficiency. Calcium was absent, and fibrosis of the valves was minimal. Defects of technique ...

Quantum phase transitions and observables of interest of the ground state in the Tavis–Cummings model are analyzed, for any number of atoms, by using a tensorial product of coherent states. It is found that this 'trial' state constitutes a very good approximation to the exact quantum solution, in that it globally reproduces the expectation values of the matter and field observables. These include the population and dipole moments of the two-level atoms and the squeezing parameter. Agreement in the ...

The Magdalena Pilot Project provided outreach to Albuquerque women sex workers who were also using illicit drugs, primarily cocaine and heroin. This initial uncontrolled trial evaluated the feasibility and potential impact of motivational interviewing (MI) on change in drug use and HIV risk behaviors. Twenty-seven women were enrolled and interviewed about their substance use, health risk behaviors, and plans for change, using the client-centered, directive method of MI. Four months later, 25 women ( ...

A survey of Arcobacter spp. was conducted over a 12-month period in Guadalajara, Mexico. A total of 135 samples (45 lean ground beef samples, 45 lean ground pork samples, and 45 chicken samples, including drumsticks, gizzards, and ground or chopped breast) were collected from local butcheries. The samples were enriched in Johnson-Murano enrichment medium and then streaked onto Johnson-Murano agar plates. Typical colonies were subjected to microscopic and biochemical identification followed by polymerase ...

To study the potential of three bacterial pathogens to cross-contaminate orange juice during extraction, normal operation conditions during juice preparation at food service establishments were simulated. The spread of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes from inoculated oranges to work surfaces and to the final product was determined. The transference of these three bacterial pathogens to orange juice made from uninoculated oranges with the ...

The method of conjugate gradients is used to expedite the learning process of feedforward multilayer artificial neural networks and to systematically update both the learning parameter and the momentum parameter at each training cycle. The mechanism for the occurrence of premature saturation of the network nodes observed with the backpropagation algorithm is described, suggestions are made to eliminate this undesirable phenomenon, and the reason by which this phenomenon is precluded in the method ...

Different activated carbons modified with iron hydro(oxide) nanoparticles were tested for their ability to adsorb arsenic from water. Adsorption isotherms were determined at As (V) concentrations < 1 ppm, with varying pH (6, 7, 8) and temperature (25 and 35 °C). Also, competition effect of anions on the As (V) adsorption capacity was evaluated using groundwater. The surface areas of the modified activated carbons ranged from 632 m2 g−1 to 1101 m2 g−1, and their maximum arsenic adsorption capacity varied ...

Abstract This work discusses a sequential niching algorithm for multiple optimal determination. The procedure consists of a sequence of genetic algorithms (GA) runs, which incorporate a gradient-based hill-climbing algorithm, and make use of a derating function and of niching and clearing techniques to promote the occupation of different niches in the function to be optimized. Thus, the algorithm searches the solution space eliminating from the fitness landscape previously located peaks forcing the ...

The neuromodulatory effect of NO on glutamatergic transmission has been studied in several brain areas. Our previous single-cell studies suggested that NO facilitates glutamatergic transmission in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). In this study, we examined the effect of the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on glutamatergic and reflex transmission in the NTS. We measured mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and renal sympathetic nerve ...
