Abstract In the Kotaki River Valley, Japan, the Fossa Magna has produced a large-scale collapse and landslide zone. Debris flows occur annually in the Kotaki River, which has headstreams in the Hakuba range (altitude: 2267 m) located in Niigata Prefecture. Sediment-related disasters occur over extensive areas from headwater to downstream cities and in a variety of forms. This will produce large quantities of upstream sand in the future, which may cause flooding through the deposition of sediment ...

Investigation of the correlation between measure of damage tensor and acoustic anisotropy of specimens from commercial alloy was carried out. The relationship between the principal values of damage tensor and the velocities of ultrasonic waves was established. The formula for acoustic anisotropy based on the principal values of damage tensor was proposed. It allows to describe the anisotropy of the accumulation of damages, which have a significant influence on acoustic anisotropy. The nonlinear ...

We show that an electro-osmotic flow near the slippery hydrophobic surface depends strongly on the mobility of surface charges, which are balanced by counterions of the electrostatic diffuse layer. For a hydrophobic surface with immobile charges, the fluid transport is considerably amplified by the existence of a hydrodynamic slippage. In contrast, near the hydrophobic surface with mobile adsorbed charges, it is also controlled by an additional electric force, which increases the shear stress at ...

Abstract The liquid crystals anchoring theory is considered on the molecular level. Earlier calculations of mesogenic molecules interaction energy with graphite and PE surface give results being one-two orders higher than experimentally obtained values. To explain the experimental values of anchoring energy we proposed its dependence on the interaction between liquid crystal layers. In our calculations we have simulated the mesogen molecules by virtual rod-like molecules. The molecules orientation ...

Electrocatalytic conversion of methane over Ag-, Pt-, Ni- and Pt+CeO2-based electrode-catalysts in a cell with a solid oxygen conducting electrolyte: CH4,electrode-catalyst|0.9ZrO2+0.1Y2O3|Pt+PrO2,airwas studied at 660–850°C and the ratio of methane and electrochemically pumped oxygen flows of 0.8–2.0. Unlike Ag and Pt+CeO2 electrodes, the Ni and Pt electrodes were found to be active electrode-catalysts for partial oxidation of methane to syngas with the concentration ratio of [H2]/[CO]≈2.

This article is aimed at the analysis of various theories enabling determination of fields of high-frequency vibration of complex dynamic structures. The considered theories are characterized by different degrees of information and ease of application. Chapter I deals with the classical theory of random vibration of complex structures. It gives full information on the vibration field of the structures, but it can hardly be practically applied in the case of the broad band random load. Further suggested ...

A new figure of merit appropriate for optically addressed liquid-crystal spatial light modulators is derived. This figure of merit takes into account the change of phase retardation and switching time of a deformed liquid-crystal layer. The figure of merit is used in determining the optimal mix of polar and weak-polar components in the liquid-crystal layer.

Agents involved in controlling the circadian rhythms (chronobiotics) potentially can modify the outcomes of chemotherapeutics administered at different times of the day. Pineal hormone melatonin (MT) is a prototypic chronobiotic. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate ...

The outer surface of isolated metaphase chromosomes has been investigated by a method of thermally activated tritium labelling. We show that both chromosomal proteins and DNA are tritium-labelled. Fractionation of the chromosomal proteins reveals that scaffold proteins are the most labelled in condensed and EDTA-decondensed chromosomes. Exposition of some scaffold proteins on the outer surface of metaphase chromosomes is suggested.

During experimental CCl4 cirrhosis, an increase of membrane-associated factor stimulating 3T3 cell proliferation in vitro was observed. This stimulator is a 150-kD protein similar to one previously described. In situ perfusion released growth stimulatory activity, suggesting a peripheral plasma membrane protein localizing on basolateral surfaces. The activity increased with increasing number of CCl4 treatments, reaching a maximum at the 14th intoxication. It was faster than the proliferation of ...

Abstract A test of lepton flavor universality in B ± → K ± μ + μ − and B ± → K ± e + e − decays, as well as a measurement of differential and integrated branching fractions of a nonresonant B ± → K ± μ + μ − decay are presented. The analysis is made possible by a dedicated data set of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV recorded in 2018, by the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a special high-rate data stream designed for collecting about 10 billion unbiased b hadron decays. The ratio of the branching fractions B ( B ± → K ± μ + μ − ) to ...

Acoustic anisotropy is a consequence of anisotropy of the mechanical characteristics of a solid. In metals, it is associated with microstructural anisotropy of mechanical characteristics, internal mechanical stresses and strains, including residual stresses and plastic deformations. Sensors measuring acoustic anisotropy do not require complex preparations of a metal surface, therefore it is easy to measure which makes it possible for measurement results to be used to quantify stresses and strains ...

The paper addresses the problem of transient performance improvement of direct model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of discrete linear time-invariant (LTI) plants. Two solutions to the problem are proposed and use the certainty equivalence principle and the idea of regressor recording over a past period of time. The article is concerned with the possibilities of the application of the standard method for measuring acoustic anisotropy to the estimation of the degree of plastic deformation. Solutions to the problem of propagation of a sound wave in an isotropic elastic-plastic material are obtained and analyzed. The dependences of the velocity of longitudinal and transverse waves of different polarization on plastic strain are derived. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that the absolute value of ...

Nowadays modified oligonucleotides are widely used in diagnostics and as novel therapeutics. Introduction of modified or unnatural residues into oligonucleotides allows fine tuning of their binding properties to complementary nucleic acids and leads to improved stability both in vitro and in vivo. Previously it was demonstrated that insertion of phenoxazine nucleotides with various groups in C9-position into oligonucleotides leads to a significant increase of duplex stability with complementary ...

To this end, the distribution of hydrogen due to the diffusion in a system composed from two rods coupled by an imperfect interface is analysed. It is shown that the governing equation for 1-D diffusion is reduced to a generalized Mathieu equation. A closed form expression for the principle instability regions is obtained and a safe level of harmonic load is determined under which the fatigue ...
