When monitoring the state of health of Fraxinus excelsior trees, unusual symptoms were discovered within a F. excelsior plantation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These symptoms included the appearance of necrosis and cankers in the basal parts of the trees, followed by the formation of fruiting bodies, however, none of these symptoms were found in the crowns. After sampling and isolation of the necrotic parts from the stem base, pathogen Neonectria punicea was isolated and identified from the characteristics ...

Phytophthora infections are followed by histological alterations, physiological and metabolomic adjustments in the host but very few studies contemplate these changes simultaneously. Fagus sylvatica seedlings were inoculated with A1 and A2 mating types of the heterothallic P. ×cambivora and with the homothallic P. plurivora to identify plant physiological and metabolomic changes accompanying microscope observations of the colonization process one, two and three weeks after inoculation. Phytophthora ...

We have demonstrated that the red blood cell (RBC) membrane of the hereditarily anemic Belgrade laboratory (b/b) rat contains protein 4.1b isoform, only. The evidence are given that the synthesis of protein 4.1 in the b/b rat reticulocytes is the same as in normal rat. When haemolytic anaemia was induced in normal rat by in vivo phenyhydrazine treatment the same phenomenon, i.e., the absence of protein 4.1a in the RBC membrane was observed. The increase of 4.1a isoform was monitored in RBCs during ...

Indented growth rings were found long ago to be experimentally induced in Pinus halepensis Miller by thin parallel axial scratching of the bark up to the vascular cambium with a sharp blade. Here, we show that when the bark and vascular cambium of P. halepensis are wounded by wide and long parallel axial wounds (“windows”) rather than by thin scratches, the induced indented growth rings become dramatically more indented. All ten trees that were wounded by long parallel “windows” responded with very ...

It is already known that UV irradiation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a disease of unknown etiology, denatures DNA in cells of the skin. We considered the change ofantigenic properties of UV irradiated DNA depending on UV spectral region and time of exposure to UV rays. Native DNA was irradiated and tested with antibodies from anti-DNA positive sera of lupus patients. We obtained negative DNA-antiDNA reactions ranging from 32,10 to 91,67% of the control for the spectral region peaking at ...

Abstract Key message Fungal infection was outlined as a potential reason for the onset of indented annual growth ring formation during the juvenile phase of hazel wood growth. Annual growth ring indentations resulted from the formation of disturbed zones which originated solely in close proximity to leaf traces. Context Hazel wood is an abnormal type of woody tissue that is formed as a result of exogenous stimuli that may trigger long-term responses in the cambium. Cambial responses produce anatomical ...

The occurrence of indented growth-rings, commonly known as hazel wood, is rare in nature and the biology of its formation has not been studied much. Here, we review the current understanding and update on the issue of indented growth-rings formation in trees. We propose distinguishing between internally induced indented growth-rings, and externally induced ones as the outcome of cambial wounding (following fires, rockfall, various human activities, by insects, mammalian herbivores, and pathogens). ...

Previous phytopathological studies of the fungal pathogen Nectria cinnabarina have been focused on its distribution and host diversity but little is known about the spread of this pathogen and the defence responses of forest trees to an infection inside host tissues. Histopathological alterations of bark, periderm, phloem and woody tissues were investigated in sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) branches following their natural attack by the advanced anamorph and teleomorph developmental stages ...
