Using the accretion disk physics of Lynden-Bell and Pringle, we constructed a section of a model of the primitive solar nebula, subject to the assumption that the optically thick part of the disk is convective and isentropic and that there is a steady mass flow toward the axis of the disk at the rate of 10−5 solar masses per year. The properties of the model support these assumptions. We studied that portion of the disk which includes the interface between the region where high-temperature solid ...

The morbidity and mortality associated with impaired/delayed fracture healing remain high. Our objective was to identify a small nonpeptidyl molecule with the ability to promote fracture healing and prevent malunions. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) causes significant increases in bone mass and bone strength when administered systemically or locally to the skeleton. However, due to side effects, PGE2 is an unacceptable therapeutic option for fracture healing. PGE2 mediates its tissue-specific pharmacological ...

To investigate the role of different regions of hirudin in the interaction with the proteinase thrombin, segments of hirudin containing 15‐51 residues were synthesized. The C‐terminal segment 40‐65 inhibited the fibrinogen clotting activity of thrombin but not amidolysis of tosyl‐Gly‐Pro‐Arg‐ p ‐nitroanilide. Central peptide 15–42 was insoluble at pH 7, but peptide 15‐65 inhibited fibrinogen clotting and amidolysis to an equal extent. The N‐terminal loop peptide 1‐15 had no inhibitory activity and ...

The immunoglobulin μ pre-mRNA is alternatively processed at its 3′ end by competing splice and cleavage-polyadenylation reactions to generate mRNAs encoding the membrane-associated or secreted forms of the IgM protein, respectively. The relative use of the competing processing pathways varies during B-lymphocyte development, and it has been established previously that cleavage-polyadenylation activity is higher in plasma cells, which secrete IgM, than in B cells, which produce membrane-associated ...

Abstract Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) Programs in Canada have been developed for the pulp and paper and metal mining industries. The EEM Program conducts cyclical evaluations of receiving environments to determine whether effects exist when facilities comply with existing regulations. Investigation of cause (IOC) is a specific stage in the EEM Program that is used after environmental effects in fish and/or benthos have been detected, confirmed and their extent and magnitude have been documented. ...

This study examined the efficacy of UV light for reducing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in unpasteurized cider. Cider containing a mixture of acid-resistant E. coli O157:H7 (6.3 log CFU/ml) was treated using a thin-film UV disinfection unit at 254 nm. Dosages ranged from 9,402 to 61,005 μW-s/cm2. Treatment significantly reduced E. coli O157:H7 (P ≤ 0.0001). Mean reduction for all treated samples was 3.81 log CFU/ml. Reduction was also affected by the level of background microflora in cider. Results indicate ...
