To establish the relative potency ofnaproxen and aspirinfor oral analgesia, a 4‐point, noncrossover bioassay with placebo control was undertaken with 197 patients. Subjective‐response methods were used to determine two measures of postoperative analgesia over aperiod of 6 hr. With reasonable confidence for an oral analgesic assay, we found 220 mg of naproxen to be equivalent to 600 mg of aspirin for pain relief and 330 mg of naproxen to be equivalent to 600 mg of aspirin for decreased pain intensity.

Abstract Interferon (IFN) was detected upon co‐culture of cloned Sendai virus (SV)‐specific T lymphocyte with SV‐presenting syngeneic stimulator cells. The antiviral activity was defined as IFN‐α, β. The T cell clones, upon contact with antigen‐presenting stimulator cells, stimulated adherent cells present in the stimulator cell population to secrete IFN. Induction of IFN production was independent from interleukin 2 production by the T cell clones.

To examine associations between elevated white blood cell count (WBC) and cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) mortality independent of cigarette smoking and by gender. We used Cox regression analyses of data from 8459 adults (3982 men; 4477 women) aged 30 to 75 years in the NHANES II Mortality Study (1976–1992) to estimate the relative risk of death from CeVD across quartiles of WBC. During 17 years of follow-up, there were 192 deaths from CeVD (93 men; 99 women). Compared with those with WBC (cells/mm3) 8200 ...

Abstract To gain an insight into the phenomena that are initiated when superphosphate is placed in soil, tablets containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate were placed in several soils and observed directly. Petrographic examinations and supporting chemical studies gave information on chemical reactions associated with the dissolution process and on the transport of materials to and from the tablet—factors that bear upon the distribution and chemical combination of the phosphorus and thus upon ...

Earlier studies showed that two protein components, P I and P II , are concerned with the adenylylation and deadenylylation of Escherichia coli glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2). P I by itself catalyzes both adenylylation and deadenylylation, but its activity is modulated by the P II -protein and by glutamine, 2-oxoglutarate, ATP, and UTP, The P II -protein exists in two forms: one form, P II -AT, stimulates P I -catalyzed adenylylation activity in the absence of glutamine and makes this activity very ...

DNA ligases are key enzymes involved in the repair and replication of DNA. Prokaryotic DNA ligases uniquely use NAD+ as the adenylate donor during catalysis, whereas eukaryotic enzymes use ATP. This difference in substrate specificity makes the bacterial enzymes potential targets for therapeutic intervention. We have developed a homogeneous chemiluminescence-based hybridization protection assay for Staphylococcus aureus DNA ligase that uses novel acridinium ester technology and demonstrate that ...

Unemployment has been associated with poor psychologic well-being. Using data from the 2001 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we examined relationships between unemployment and frequent mental distress (FMD), defined as 14 or more mentally unhealthy days during the previous 30 days, among 98,267 men and women aged 25–64 years. The age-standardized prevalence of FMD was 6.6% (standard error, 0.14) among employed adults, 14.0% (2.00) among adults unemployed >1 year, and 15.5% (1.18) among those ...
