Hypothesis Failure of voluntary activation is an important source of weakness in several different muscles after injury or surgery. Despite the high prevalence of shoulder rotator cuff disorders and associated weakness, no test currently exists to identify voluntary activation deficits for the rotator cuff. The purpose of this study was to develop a test to quantify voluntary activation of the infraspinatus. We hypothesized that there would be a consistent relationship between the voluntary activation ...

An important family of graphs is the n-dimensional hypercube, the graph with $2^{n}$ nodes labelled $0,1,\cdots, 2^{n}-1$, and an edge joining two nodes whenever their binary representation differs in a single coordinate. The problem of deciding if a given source graph is a partial subgraph of an n-dimensional cube has recently been shown to be NP-complete. In this paper the same problem on a very restricted family of source graphs, trees, is considered. It is shown that the problem of determining ...

Recent studies demonstrate that sustained hypoxia induces the robust accumulation of leukocytes and mesenchymal progenitor cells in pulmonary arteries (PAs). Since the factors orchestrating hypoxia-induced vascular inflammation are not well-defined, the goal of this study was to identify mediators potentially responsible for recruitment to and retention and differentiation of circulating cells within the hypoxic PA. We analyzed mRNA expression of 44 different chemokine/chemokine receptor, cytokine, ...

We report the first incision rates derived from burial ages of cave sediments from the Mur river catchment at the eastern margin of the Eastern Alps. At the transition zone between the Alpine orogen and the Pannonian basin, this river passes through the Paleozoic of Graz — a region of karstifiable rocks called the Central Styrian Karst. This river dissects the study area in a north–south direction and has left behind an abundance of caves. These caves can be grouped into several distinct levels according ...

Abstract IL-4 prevents the death of naive B lymphocytes through the up-regulation of antiapoptotic proteins such as Bcl-xL. Despite studies implicating glucose utilization in growth factor-dependent survival of hemopoietic cells, the role of glucose energy metabolism in maintaining B cell viability by IL-4 is unknown. We show that IL-4 triggers glucose uptake, Glut1 expression, and glycolysis in splenic B cells; this is accompanied by increased cellular ATP. Glycolysis inhibition results in apoptosis, ...

Tissue level density and elastic modulus are intrinsic properties that can be used to quantify bone material and analyses incorporating those quantities have been used to evaluate bone on a macroscopic scale. Micro-computed tomography (microCT) technology has been used to construct tissue level finite element models to simulate macroscopic fracture strength, however, a single method for assigning voxel-specific tissue density and elastic modulus based on those data has not been universally accepted. ...

Postnatal development of the mammary gland requires interactions between the epithelial and stromal compartments, which regulate actions of hormones and growth factors. IGF-I is expressed in both epithelial and stromal compartments during postnatal development of the mammary gland. However, little is known about how local expression of IGF-I in epithelium or stroma regulates mammary growth and differentiation during puberty and pregnancy-induced alveolar development. The goal of this study was to ...

An abnormally high rate of aerobic glycolysis is characteristic of many transformed cells. Here we report the polyphenolic compound, resveratrol, inhibited phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI-3K) signaling and glucose metabolism, coinciding with cell-cycle arrest, in germinal center (GC)-like LY1 and LY18 human diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs). Specifically, resveratrol inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt, p70 S6K, and S6 ribosomal protein on activation residues. Biochemical analyses and nuclear ...
