Land development in most Saudi cities including Jeddah is generated by formal land subdivision and informal land development usually referred to as unplanned settlements. Both types of developments contributed to urban sprawl and other urban challenges. Jeddah Municipality attempted to improve land development by encouraging large urban developments. Recently, Jeddah Municipality approved four large urban developments which appear to manifest encouraging implications for urban growth and land development ...

Pain control following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is crucial to hasten rehabilitation and decrease morbidity. We evaluated whether there is a difference between epidural infusion and continuous femoral nerve block with respect to postoperative pain control and rehabilitation course. Fifty patients completed the study. There was no statistically significant difference in the pain scores (P=0.33), morphine consumption (P=0.09) mean blood pressure or heart rate (P=0.957, and P=0.716) between groups. ...

New sonographic quality criteria to optimize optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements were suggested. The latter were correlated to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI).We investigated whether ONSD measurements were correlated to simultaneous ICP measurements in severe TBI.Forty patients with severe TBI (Marshall Scale ≥II and GCS ≤8) participated in the study. All patients had an intraparenchymal ICP catheter inserted, while ONSD was measured bilaterally, upon admission ...

In this paper, we introduce a novel model that simulates the spread of the monkeypox virus. The new model takes into account the effect of the interaction between the human and rodent population along with some realistic factors that have not been introduced before such as imperfect vaccination and nonlinear incidence rates. Moreover, the human population is further divided into low-risk and high-risk groups to better reflect recent observations. To understand the dynamics of the new model, the ...

The periodic transmission of the customers' power consumption readings in the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is essential for energy management and billing. To collect the readings efficiently, the change and transmit approach is adopted in AMI (CAT AMI) so that the readings are reported only when there is enough change in the consumption. However, CAT AMI suffers from malicious customers who launch electricity-theft cyberattacks by manipulating their readings to illegally reduce their bills. ...

Municipalities in Saudi Arabia are working hard to make use of rapid advances in information technology (IT), especially geographic information systems (GIS), to improve their performance and increase their effectiveness. Most initiatives in IT applications, including GIS, are limited to individual departments rather than supporting comprehensive institutional operations. This has resulted in fragmented applications with isolated databases. It is obvious that the municipalities lack an overall framework ...

A number of countries are today implementing open government data (OGD) initiatives. Yet many of these initiatives are failing to attract the levels of continuous use they need to deliver an acceptable return on investment. This raises the obvious question of why this should be the case. To answer this question, it is important to understand the factors that most strongly influence user behaviour in OGD adoption. Qualitative data were used to identify the factors that play a key role in influencing ...

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a major etiology of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children. We tested 149 patients admitted to King Fahd Hospital of the University with diagnosis of LRTI. Viremia caused by the different studied viruses was detected in 31.5% of the total cases by Real-time Polymerase chain reaction. We report five patients who were positive for HBoV in serum samples. Clinical presentation ranged from mild to severe disease as one of them required admission to intensive ...

Alumina silicate powder which is extracted from the obsolete spark plug NGK (insulator part as a filler) has been used to produce epoxy/alumina silicate composite. The dielectric behavior of the composite materials (epoxy resin-alumina silicate NGK) is analyzed as a function of the filler content, temperature and frequency. AC conductivity and impedance are also studied. The results show that the permittivity, dielectric loss and loss tangent for all composites increase with increasing alumina silicate ...

Abstract Serious problems will be presented due to using conventional chemical additives to regulate the drilling mud properties, as they have health, safety, and environmental side effects. Thus, there is a considerable necessity for alternative multifunctional bio-enhancer drilling mud additives, which can assist in optimizing the drilling fluid specifications and enhance its effectiveness with the least effects on the environment and the drilling personnel safety. The effects of adding two concentrations ...

In this study, ultraviolet (UV), ozone techniques with hydrogen peroxide oxidant were used to treat the wastewater which is produced from South Baghdad Power Station using lab-scale system. From UV-H2O2 experiments, it was shown that the optimum exposure time was 80 min. At this time, the highest removal percentages of oil, COD, and TOC were 84.69 %, 56.33 % and 50 % respectively. Effect of pH on the contaminants removing was studied in the range of (2-12). The best oil, COD, and TOC removal percentages ( ...
