The 29 September 2009 South Pacific tsunami reached the islands of Futuna and Alofi, 650 km to the west of its origin, between 7 and 7:20 am on 30 September, local time. No warning was issued. We measured run-up heights and inundation distances at 41 sites around the islands. The worst impact (4.5 m run-up; 85 m inundation; 3.8 m flow depth) was observed on Alofi's NW beach. On Futuna, maximum run-ups of 4.4 m on the eastern tip and 4.3 m on the NW tip of the island are associated with maximum inundations ...

Mean conditions, seasonal, and ENSO-related (El Nifio Southern Oscillation) variability in the vicinity of Wallis, Futuna, and Samoa islands (13"-1.5"S, 180"-170" W) over the 1973-1995 period are analysed for wind pseudostress, satellite-derived and in situ precipitation, sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS), sea level, and O-450 m temperature and geostrophic current. The mean local conditions reflect the presence of the large scale features such as the western Pacific warm pool, the South ...

A total of 194 species of marine algae (14 Cyanobacteria, 41 Chlorophyta, 11 Heterokontophyta and 128 Rhodophyta), as well as three species of seagrasses, represent the first published records for the isolated island of Wallis, South Pacific. The flora has its strongest affinities with Fiji and Rotuma, followed by Samoa and French Polynesia. The lack of diverse habitats and its geographical location are invoked to explain the relatively low species richness compared with localities such as Fiji and ...

The metal-rich character of this LT hydrothermal activity may be of major importance for future research on the net flux of hydrothermally derived metals (e.g. Ni, Co, Cu) to the open ocean.

Species composition and vertical distribution of planktonic organisms in Lakes Lalolalo, Lanutavake, and Lano on the Pacific island of Uvea were investigated in relation to physicochemical water column profiles of temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and pH. The meromictic lakes Lalolalo (maximum depth 88.5 m) and Lanutavake (23.6 m) exhibited a strong chemocline with anoxic conditions below 10 m depth. Mixis was inhibited by sheltered topography, thermal stratification, and in Lalolalo a ...

Multi-proxy studies of trench sediments from Futuna island, in the Wallis and Futuna archipelago, have produced a record of two palaeotsunamis dated to around 1860–2000 BP and c. 470 BP. One of the most useful proxies in this study has been the archaeological data associated with occupations that immediately underlie the deposits associated with both palaeotsunamis. The reworking of the archaeological material into the palaeotsunami deposits and the additional chronological control provided by artefacts ...

Abstract. We investigated the tsunami hazard in the remote French territory of Wallis and Futuna, Southwest Pacific, using the Gerris flow solver to produce numerical models of tsunami generation, propagation and inundation. Wallis consists of the inhabited volcanic island of Uvéa that is surrounded by a lagoon delimited by a barrier reef. Futuna and the island of Alofi form the Horn Archipelago located ca. 240 km east of Wallis. They are surrounded by a narrow fringing reef. Futuna and Alofi emerge ...

Historically, the human prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti infection in Wallis and Futuna (WAF) was among the highest in the Pacific and mass drug administration (MDA) against lymphatic filariasis (LF) either with diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) or the combination of DEC and albendazole had been implemented for decades. To determine whether LF antigen prevalence in WAF was lower than 1%, the infection threshold for elimination in an area where Aedes spp. are the principal vectors, we conducted the ...

Two newly discovered hydrothermal vent fields of the Wallis and Futuna region, Kulo Lasi and Fatu Kapa, were sampled for fluid geochemistry. A great geochemical diversity was observed and assigned to the diversity of lithologies as well as the occurrence of various processes. Kulo Lasi fluids likely formed by interaction with fresh volcanic rocks, phase separation, and mixing with magmatic fluid. Conversely, the geochemistry of the Fatu Kapa fluids would be mostly due to water/felsic lavas reactions. ...

Ending Zero-COVID is challenging, particularly when vaccine coverage is low. Considering Wallis and Futuna, a French Zero-COVID territory affected by reluctance to vaccination, low immunity and high levels of comorbidities, we investigate how targeted use of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (brand name Paxlovid) can complement vaccination and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), and mitigate the epidemic rebound expected when Zero-COVID ends.

The study area is close to the Wallis and Futuna Islands in the French EEZ. It exists on the western boundary of the fastest tectonic area in the world at the junction of the Lau and North-Fiji basins. At this place, the unstable back-arc accommodates the plate motion in three ways: (i) the north Fiji transform fault, (ii) numerous unstable spreading ridges, and (iii) large areas of recent volcanic activity. This instability creates bountiful opportunity for hydrothermal discharge to occur. Based on ...

The morphology and growth analysis of coral microatolls using X-rays indicates that after a subsidence of 3 cm from 1977 to 1993, an uplift of 5 cm occurred in 1993 in the southeast of Futuna (southwest Pacific). These vertical motions are related to the strain accumulation followed by their relaxation during the earthquake (Mw: 6.4) on 12 March 1993. The locations published by the global network are not in agreement with the aftershocks recorded locally and the co-seismic uplifts observed on the ...

The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Wallis and Futuna (WAF) was one of the highest in the Pacific and was the driving factor for introducing hepatitis B (HepB) vaccination in 1992 and HepB birth dose (HepB-BD) in 2006. Using lymphatic filariasis (LF) transmission assessment survey (TAS) as a survey platform for eliminating LF, we assessed HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) seroprevalence, HepB vaccination coverage, and its timeliness among schoolchildren in WAF.
