The application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in vertebrate palaeontology is very rare. We describe the discovery of an Early Pliocene sirenian skeleton detected by GPR in a locality near Grosseto (Tuscany, Italy). The specimen represents one of the most complete skeletons of Metaxytherium subapenninum (Mammalia: Sirenia) ever found in the Mediterranean area. Using a monostatic antenna of 200 MHz, this non-invasive technique allowed us to detect most of the bones of the skeleton (skull, mandible, ...

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a progressive degenerative condition that manifests as low back pain with neurogenic claudication as a cardinal clinical feature. Although mild radicular symptoms can often be successfully treated with conservative care, management of lumbar spinal stenosis grows increasingly difficult as symptoms worsen. No satisfactory nonsurgical treatments exist to manage moderate radicular symptoms and, therefore, these patients are faced with the decision of continuing ineffective ...

We evaluated the safety and effectiveness of the minimally invasive Superion(®) Interspinous Spacer (VertiFlex, Inc., San Clemente, CA) in patients with moderate LSS.This single-arm prospective study enrolled 121 patients with moderate LSS between February 2008 and August 2009 and were followed up at 1 (n=111), 3 (n=96), 6 (n=81), and 12 (n=52) months. All patients were treated with the Superion Interspinous Spacer. Main outcomes were back function with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), extremity and ...

The classical microsurgical approach in the treatment of herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) has been substituted over the years by endoscopical approach, in which it is possible to practice via endoscopy a laser thermo-discoplasty, and by percutaneous laser disc decompression and nucleotomy. Percutaneous laser disc decompression and nucleotomy have been performed worldwide in more than 40,000 cases of HNP. Because water is the major component of the intervertebral disc and in HNP pain is caused by ...

A discogenic etiology is being widely accepted as a primary source of chronic low-back pain. Eventhough increasing information is available on the pathophysiology of the degenerated disc, the present MR techniques are still not capable of pin-pointing the source of this pain. In other words, with a non-invasive MR1 study we can still not define which disc is painful and what are the characteristics of discogenic pain from an imaging perspective. Discography remains therefore the only functional ...

Abstract Twenty-four patients with petroclival meningiomas were operated upon at the neurosurgical clinic of the City Hospital of Hannover between 1978 and 1987. Seventeen were women and seven men; the mean age was 45 years. Symptoms were usually present for more than 2 years before the diagnosis was made. The most common symptom was disturbance of gait; the most common preoperative sign was cranial nerve deficit, mainly of the 7th and 8th nerves. Preoperative neuroradiological evaluation included ...

The time course of revascularization of grafted nerves, and the possible dependence of this revascularization on the length of the graft are two related questions that are addressed. Survival of Schwann cells in the nerve graft and a timely revascularization must be seen as a precondition for an optimal regeneration process. The revascularization process after different postoperative intervals is demonstrated in the sciatic nerve of rabbits by the use of microangiography, with Roentgen-positive ...

Fluids supplied by stored magma at depth are causal factors of volcanic unrest, as they can cause pressurization/heating of hydrothermal systems. However, evidence for links between hydrothermal pressurization, CO2 emission and volcano seismicity have remained elusive. Here, we use recent (2010−2020) observations at Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) to show hydrothermal pressure, gas emission and seismicity at CFc share common source areas and well-matching temporal evolutions. We interpret the recent escalation ...

We investigated 8 patients harbouring astrocytomas (histologically confirmed via stereotactic serial biopsy) of different malignity with single voxel (PRESS) 1 H MRS techniques. The measurements were also repeated after interstitial radiosurgery using 125 Iodine, when this treatment modality was deemed indicated. Apart ...

Eccentric exercises have been used in physical training, injury prevention, and rehabilitation programs. The systematic use of eccentric training promotes specific morphological adaptations on skeletal muscles. However, synergistic muscles, such as the triceps surae components, might display different structural adaptations due to differences in architecture, function, and load sharing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an eccentric training program on the triceps ...

Interspinous spacers have recently been used in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis. In vitro studies have demonstrated a reduction in facet joint forces by 68% and annulus pressures by 63%. MRI studies have demonstrated increased canal and neural foraminal area after implantation of these devices. Previous studies by Zucherman et al. (Spine 30:1351–1358, 2005) demonstrated patient satisfaction rates of 71–73%. We carried out a multicentric retrospective study to assess the clinical outcomes ...

Microbial contamination in the hospital environment is a major concern for public health, since it significantly contributes to the onset of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which are further complicated by the alarming level of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of HAI-associated pathogens. Chemical disinfection to control bioburden has a temporary effect and can favor the selection of resistant pathogens, as observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, probiotic-based sanitation (probiotic ...

Abstract Bile duct injury (BDI) is a dangerous complication of cholecystectomy, with significant postoperative sequelae for the patient in terms of morbidity, mortality, and long-term quality of life. BDIs have an estimated incidence of 0.4–1.5%, but considering the number of cholecystectomies performed worldwide, mostly by laparoscopy, surgeons must be prepared to manage this surgical challenge. Most BDIs are recognized either during the procedure or in the immediate postoperative period. However, ...
