Level structures in $^{60,62}\mathrm{Fe}{}_{34,36}$ and adjacent nuclei were studied with Gammasphere using the reaction of a $430$-MeV $^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ beam on a 55-mg/cm${}^{2}$ thick $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ target. High-spin level schemes were deduced from singly- and doubly-gated prompt coincidence events. Levels populated in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{60,62}\mathrm{Mn}$ isomers were studied in singly- and doubly-gated delayed coincidences. Spin and parity assignments were deduced from angular correlations ...

The low-spin level scheme of ${}^{68}$Ni was investigated with the Gammasphere array following reactions between a ${}^{70}$Zn beam and ${}^{238}$U, ${}^{208}$Pb, and ${}^{197}$Au targets. Spin assignments for some states have been verified through $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray angular correlations, including the ${0}^{+}$ assignment for the 2511-keV level. Two previously unknown states at 3302 and 3405 keV have been identified. No evidence was found for a recently reported 216-ns, ${0}^{+}$ isomer at 2202 keV that was attributed ...

Hellmuth Broda, Van D. Gooch, Walter Taylor, Nick Aiuto, J. Woodland Hastings,

During measurements of the circadian (approximately 24-hr) rhythms of spontaneous bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra, the individual cultures in vials were shielded from otherwise constant dim light for 1-3 min every 20-60 min by a photomultiplier housing that was moved from vial to vial. The high-frequency dark pulses caused a small but consistent shortening of the free-running circadian period, but there was no indication that the dark pulses caused entrainment. Hardware ...

Hellmuth Broda, Carl Hirschie Johnson, Walter Taylor, J. W. Hastings,

The effectiveness of drugs active in phase-shifting the circadian rhythm of biolu minescent glow in the unicellular dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra differs, depending upon the time of drug exposure (as pulses). For two drugs tested—cycloheximide and anisomycin, both inhibitors of cytosolic protein synthesis—this function, referred to as the drug phase response curve (dPRC), differs, depending upon the ambient temperature. Since dPRCs may differ at different drug concentrations, the effects observed ...

The neutron-rich isotopes $^{65,67}\mathrm{Fe}$ and $^{65}\mathrm{Co}$ have been produced at the LISOL facility, Louvain-La-Neuve, in the proton-induced fission of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$. Beams of these isotopes have been extracted with high selectivity by means of resonant laser ionization combined with mass separation. Yrast and near-yrast levels of $^{65}\mathrm{Co}$ have also been populated in the $^{64}\mathrm{Ni}+^{238}\mathrm{U}$ reaction at Argonne National Laboratory. New levels have been established above the 861-keV, $9/{2}^{+}$ isomeric state in $^{61}\mathrm{Fe}$. The observations can be reproduced satisfactorily by shell model calculations, but only after a significant lowering of the $\ensuremath{\nu}{g}_{9/2}$ single-particle energy with respect to the value determined empirically from levels outside a $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ core. The results are also described well within the scope of the particle-triaxial-rotor model assuming a deformation ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{2}~ ...

Level structures in $^{61,62}\mathrm{Mn}{}_{36,37}$ were studied with Gammasphere in the reaction of a $430$-MeV $^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ beam and a thick $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ target. The newly identified levels decrease in excitation energy compared to the analogous structures in the lighter Mn isotopes and behave similarly to states in the corresponding Fe isotones that involve ${g}_{9/2}$ neutron excitations. It is, however, in line with the global systematics of collective B(E3) rates found throughout the periodic table. Thus, the "exceptional" character of this transition, that challenged theory, no longer applies. Monte Carlo shell-model calculations indicate that the ...
