Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging and spectroscopy were used to assess body composition of the chicken and turkey poult. The NMR imaging was performed using a clinical, whole-body imaging system operating at 1.5 tesla (T; 63 MHz). Three-dimensional reconstruction of cross-sectional images made along the transaxial plane was used to estimate mass of the Pectoralis muscle of chickens ranging in weight from 140 to 2,760 g. Results indicate that NMR imaging can be used to determine size of the ...

Walter M. Elsasser,

In the effort to advance toward a theory of cellular function that is not completely mechanistic, I have encountered a variable whose significance is often overlooked. This is the degree of heterogeneity of organic tissue, which may vary from highly homogeneous conditions to quite large degrees of heterogeneity, primarily with respect ot chemical bonding. For several decades, I have dealt with the theoretical analysis of this type of problem, and here I give a condensed outline of the conceptual ...

In this paper we elaborate on suggestions in the recent literature that the mantle convects uniformly through its entire depth. The main novel feature introduced here, which leads to a satisfactory account of earth temperatures, it the assumption of a thermal boundary layer at the mantle. Such a layer is produced by the contrast of thermal conductivities of core and mantle if, as is now generally believed, the effects of radiative heat transfer in the mantle are small. On assuming in agreement with ...

Walter M. Elsasser,

In the model whose implications are investigated here, the lithosphere is assumed to be 100 km thick and the asthenosphere 300 km thick. A linearized viscosity is assumed, its mean value for the lithosphere being 1023 poises and for the asthenosphere 1019 poises. The mesosphere, lying below 400 km depth, is assumed to be more viscous again than the asthenosphere, but no specific values are required. The viscosity contrast of 104 between lithosphere and asthenosphere is the dominant feature of this ...

Walter M. Elsasser,

Most attempts to define life have concentrated on individual theories, mentioning others hardly at all, but here we compare all of the major current theories. We begin by asking how we know that an entity is alive, and continue by describing the contributions of La Mettrie, Burke, Leduc, Herrera, Bahadur, D’Arcy Thompson and, especially, Schrödinger, whose book What is Life? is a vital starting point. We then briefly describe and discuss (M, R) systems, the hypercycle, the chemoton, autopoiesis and ...

M. ; Rochester, M. G. Abstract The irregular shape of the moon can be explained by assuming that its density varies with angular position and possibly also with the radius, and it is shown that great strength in the deep interior is not required in this model. The outer parts must have great strength in order ...
