The metabolism of the brain was studied in normal, schizophrenic, paretic and senile subjects, and the effect of alcohol, paraldehyde and morphine was studied. Arterio-venous differences for oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose and lactic acid were determined by means of internal jugular puncture. The observations support the following conclusions: 1. The O2 arterio-venous difference of the brain in schizophrenics, both before and after insulin therapy, is normal. 2. In general paresis the O2 arterio- ...

The cerebral metabolism was estimated in 10 patients in an acutely intoxicated condition, and after recovery from the alcoholic bout. The cerebral uptake of oxygen was diminished in 6 cases, and within normal limits in the remaining 4. After recovery the uptake of oxygen was within normal limits in all cases.

A direct rate assay for plasminogen activator has been developed using a synthetic fluorogenic peptide substrate, 7-(N-Cbz-glycylglycylargininamido)-4-methylcoumarin trifluoroacetate. The assay correlates well with the standard 125I-labeled fibrin plate assay using highly purified urokinase, culture fluids from WI-38, Chinese hamster vary or HeLa cells, or Rous sarcoma virus-transformed chick fibroblasts as the source of plasminogen activator. The assay is sensitive, rapid, and linear throughout ...

Previous reports of the effect of endotoxin shock on cardiac performance have not achieved uniform results. These discrepancies have possibly been caused by the use of indices of cardiac performance that may have been sensitive to altered heart rate or preconditions of cardiac contraction as well as altered cardiac performance. We tested the hypothesis that, following a median lethal dose (LD50) of E. coli endotoxin, cardiac performance would be diminished in nonsurviving animals and maintained in ...

There is no adequate explanation for the marked fall in blood pressure which accompanies spinal anesthesia. In order to explain the mechanism by which this hypotension is developed, it would be necessary to know in detail all the changes which occur in the circulatory system. Thus far studies have shown conclusively that: 1. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures usually fall to a variable degree. 1 2. Sympathomimetic drugs usually either prevent the fall or produce a subsequent rise of blood pressure. ...

Seven species aggregates of Trichoderma and Gliocladium virens were isolated from roots of Phellinus weirii-infested Douglas-fir stumps fumigated with chloropicrin, Vorlex, or methylisothiocyanate, or left untreated. Most commonly isolated was Trichoderma viride, followed by T. hamatum, T. citrinoviride, G. virens, T. polysporum, T. saturnisporum, T. harzianum, and T. longibrachiatum. Roots from chloropicrin-treated stumps were more frequently colonized than those from untreated stumps, although ...

Summary and ConclusionsThe sugar tolerance was studied in a group of 18 alcoholic patients. On admission there was a marked diminution of the sugar tolerance, which improved after one week in the hospital on a normal diet. It is suggested that the diminished tolerance was due to an undernourished state previous to admission.

The axial projection of the glutamine synthetase molecule has been reconstructed from electron micrographs of a stained preparation by using a new method of correlation search and averaging. The average over 50 individual molecules appears as a radial pattern with sixfold symmetry. The handedness evident in the average is attributed to nonuniformity of the negative stain.

Averaged projections of individual glutamine synthetase molecules have been obtained by using electron microscopy and image processing. The methodology of correlation averaging under low dose conditions is described in detail. Because of their low signal-to-noise ratio, images made under low dose conditions cannot be directly interpreted in terms of high resolution features. Computer averaging of these images reveals a division of the subunit projection into two domains whose sizes agree with results ...

In this work, the experimental conditions and parameters necessary to optimize the long-distance (≥60 Å) double electron–electron resonance (DEER) measurements of biomacromolecules labeled with Gd(III) tags are analyzed. The specific parameters discussed are the temperature, microwave band, the separation between the pumping and observation frequencies, pulse train repetition rate, pulse durations and pulse positioning in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum. It was found that: (1) in optimized ...
