Richard Evans, Walter J.V. Vermeulen,
Electronics are produced, consumed and disposed of through a highly complex, globalised value chain, creating numerous challenges in the governance of sustainable electronics. To understand how sustainability is governed throughout the electronics value chain, this paper uses current literature to analyse the structure (e.g. actors) and composition (e.g. policy instruments) within electronics governance. These articles are then used to derive explanatory factors for the level of governance effectiveness ...

Vaccine protection against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection wanes over time, requiring updated boosters. In a phase 2, open-label, randomized clinical trial with sequentially enrolled stages at 22 US sites, we assessed safety and immunogenicity of a second boost with monovalent or bivalent variant vaccines from mRNA and protein-based platforms targeting wild-type, Beta, Delta and Omicron BA.1 spike antigens. The primary outcome was pseudovirus neutralization ...

Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of ...

BackgroundAntiplatelet therapy reduces the risk of major vascular events for people with occlusive vascular disease, although it might increase the risk of intracranial haemorrhage. Patients surviving the commonest subtype of intracranial haemorrhage, intracerebral haemorrhage, are at risk of both haemorrhagic and occlusive vascular events, but whether antiplatelet therapy can be used safely is unclear. We aimed to estimate the relative and absolute effects of antiplatelet therapy on recurrent intracerebral ...

Reduction of the uranium metallocene [η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2]2UCl2 (1), Cp'2UCl2, in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridyl and sodium naphthalene gives the dark green metallocene complex Cp'2U(bipy) (6), which reacts with p-tolyl azide or pyridine-N-oxide to give Cp'2UN(p-tolyl) (7) or Cp'2U(O)(py) (8), respectively. The Lewis acid BPh3 precipitates Ph3B(py) and gives the base-free oxo Cp'2UO (10), which crystallizes from pentane. The oxometallocene 10 behaves as a nucleophile with Me3SiX reagents, but it does ...

Malignancies of the appendix are uncommon; a small subset of these lesions are actually metastatic cancers. In some rare cases, these lesions can cause obstruction, appendicitis, and perforation. M.K. is a 54-year-old man who presented to our institution with a 1-day history of right lower quadrant pain and a past medical history significant only for a 75-pack-year smoking history. CT scan revealed a perforated appendix, and the patient was taken to the operating room where a gangrenous appendix ...

Tracking studies are often used to inform conservation plans and actions. However, species have frequently only been tracked in one or a few localities, whereas space use can be remarkably flexible, especially in long‐lived species with advanced learning abilities. We assessed variability in space use in the Critically Endangered Hooded Vulture Necrosyrtes monachus by pooling movement data from three populations across the species’ sub‐Saharan range (in South Africa, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, The ...

BACKGROUND Juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS) is characterised by gastrointestinal (GI) hamartomatous polyposis and an increased risk of GI malignancy. Juvenile polyps also occur in the Cowden (CS), Bannayan-Ruvalcaba-Riley (BRRS) and Gorlin (GS) syndromes. Diagnosing JPS can be problematic because it relies on exclusion of CS, BRRS, and GS. Germline mutations in the PTCH , PTEN and DPC4 ( SMAD4) genes can cause GS, CS/BRRS, and JPS, respectively. AIMS To examine the contribution of mutations in PTCH , PTEN , and DPC4 ( ...

Abstract A sampling procedure for estimating herbage intake by the ‘Difference’ method over short grazing periods using an electrically powered sheep‐shearing head to cut long narrow sample strips, was compared with several indirect animal techniques on single‐variety grass swards. The method provided intake estimates in good general agreement with those obtained by animal methods but discrepancies arose when used on a semi‐prostrate variety due, probably, to incomplete recovery of sampled herbage ...

SUMMARY A series of animal feeding trials was designed to determine differences between grasses in dry-matter intake and animal live-weight gain, with a view to indicating better selection criteria for improving the feeding value of herbage. Wide differences were demonstrated in feed intake and live-weight gain between single-variety grass feeds at similar levels of digestibility. S.37 cocksfoot gave consistently good and S.51 timothy, consistently poor responses. Supplementation of grass feeds ...
