An overview of measurements of partition coefficient measurements reported in the literature is given. New infinite dilution partition coefficients for aromatic components (benzyl alcohol, phenol, acetophenone, and chlorobenzene) between ionic liquid phase and supercritical CO2 phase are reported as determined with a chromatographic technique. Three types of solutes and six types of ionic liquids were studied. Infinite dilution partition coefficients became larger according to [bmim][Tf2N], [bmim][ ...

Background On 11 March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami struck off the coast of northeastern Japan. Within 3 weeks, an increased number of pneumonia admissions and deaths occurred in local hospitals. Methods A multicentre survey was conducted at three hospitals in Kesennuma City (population 74 000), northern Miyagi Prefecture. All adults aged ≥18 years hospitalised between March 2010 and June 2011 with community-acquired pneumonia were identified using hospital databases and medical records. Segmented ...

We examined whether gargling with black tea prevents influenza infection. Tests were carried out during a five month period (October 1992 to March 1993). The control group that followed their normal daily routine, whereas the test group that gargled with 0.5 w/v% black tea extract twice daily (at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.).Influenza viruses were isolated from influenza patients and an antigen analysis was carried out. As a result, two strains of influenza A viruses (H3N2) and ten strains of B virus were detected. ...

We develop a high-speed interrogation system with a wavelength-swept laser for sensing multiplexed fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). High-speed and multipoint sensing is achieved by means of a buffered Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) laser, a recently proposed high-speed wavelength-swept laser. This laser increases the measurement rate several times by tailoring the laser output with a buffer stage. The developed buffered FDML laser successfully achieves a measurement rate of 202.8 kHz using a general ...

We propose an interrogation-system with automatic recognition and delay correction functions of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) by pulse modulation with a wavelength-swept laser. By pulse-modulating the light of a wavelength-swept laser, light with an arbitrary wavelength bandwidth can be extracted as the pulsed light. In the automatic recognition function of FBGs, the pulsed light is sequentially controlled to match the wavelength bandwidth of each FBG. This recognition method enables the selection ...

We report a case of tumor regression of multiple bone metastases from breast carcinoma after administration of strontium-89 chloride. This case suggests that strontium-89 chloride can not only relieve bone metastases pain not responsive to analgesics, but may also have a tumoricidal effect on bone metastases.

Sulfasalazine (SSZ) and tofacitinib are effective for treating rheumatoid arthritis, however, their effects on chondrocytes have not been fully understood. We here tried to elucidate their effects on chondrocyte proteins. We treated chondrocytes from five osteoarthritis patients with IL-1β, IL-1β+ SSZ, IL-1β+ tofacitinib, SSZ alone, and tofacitinib alone. Then, we compared protein profiles of the chondrocytes using two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis. Further, we identified altered proteins ...

Objective. In our previous screening of chondrocyte protein profiles, the amount of adenosine monophosphate deaminase (AMPD) 2 was found to be decreased by tofacitinib. Extending the study, here we confirmed the decrease of AMPD2 by tofacitinib and further investigated effects of tofacitinib on purine nucleotide metabolism. Methods. Human articular chondrocytes and a chondrosarcoma cell line: OUMS-27 were stimulated with tofacitinib. Then the levels of AMPD2 and its related enzymes were investigated ...

S‐1 is an oral anticancer agent composed of tegafur (FT), 5‐chloro‐2,4‐dihydroxypyridine (CDHP), and potassium oxonate. CDHP is added to prevent degradation of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) by inhibiting dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. CYP2A6 is involved in the biotransformation of FT to 5‐FU. Thus, we prospectively analyzed the effects of the CYP2A6 genotype, plasma level of CDHP, and patient characteristics on the pharmacokinetic (PK) variability of FT and 5‐FU. Fifty‐four Japanese patients with metastatic ...

Optical absorption coefficient of expanded fluid Hg has been measured in the density range up to 7.5 g/cm3. The density variation of the optical gap below 7.5 g/cm3 suggests that it closes near 10 g/cm3, which nearly coincides with the metal-nonmetal transition density estimated from electrical transport data. At low densities d around 1 g/cm3 the absorption coefficient in the tail part of the absorption band shows a dependence on d4, which may suggest formation of Hg4 clusters in the compressed ...

CD26 binds to caveolin-1 in antigen-presenting cells (APC), and that ligation of CD26 by caveolin-1 induces T cell proliferation in a TCR/CD3-dependent manner. We report herein the effects of CD26-caveolin-1 costimulatory blockade by fusion protein caveolin-1-Ig (Cav-Ig). Soluble Cav-Ig inhibits T cell proliferation and cytokine production in response to recall antigen, or allogeneic APC. Our data hence suggest that blocking of CD26-associated signaling by soluble Cav-Ig may be an effective approach ...

In this study, we made technical advances in fluorescence laser microdissection (LMD) in combination with the absolute quantification of small amounts of mRNAs from a region of interest (ROI) in fluorescence-labeled tissue sections. We demonstrate that our fluorescence LMD-RTqPCR method has three orders of dynamic range, with the lower limit of ROI-size corresponding ...
