Recently, however, its use has been advocated in the prophylaxis of primary ventricular fibrillation occurring after myocardial infarction. This recommendation is based primarily on the well-designed and controlled study of ...

Wayne Sandholtz, Alec Stone Sweet,

We published 'European integration and supranational governance' (Stone Sweet and Sandholtz 1997) knowing that the piece could not stand entirely on its own. Being an abridged introduction to a forthcoming book and the product of intensive collaboration with a small group over several years, it suffers from its removal from the contextual richness of the greater project. Nonetheless, we did our best to survey the theoretical materials at play, and we tried to express the group's concerns for process, ...

Wayne A. M. Visser, Alastair Macintosh,

Abstract Usury - lending at interest or excessive interest - has, according to known records, been practised in various parts of the world for at least four thousand years. During this time, there is substantial evidence of intense criticism by various traditions, institutions and social reformers on moral, ethical, religious and legal grounds. The rationale employed by these wide-ranging critics have included arguments about work ethic, social justice, economic instability, ecological destruction and ...

Wayne Woodward,

Theoretical discussion of the “triad” has contributed significantly to this century's study of symbolic processes and communication; however, a systematic triadic theory has failed to emerge. Preliminary analysis suggests that such a theory could prove relevant to contemporary understandings of communication, particularly those views that emphasize the construction of symbolic worlds, as this occurs through collection, storage, augmentation, and retrieval of a common stock of information or knowledge. ...

This article is an examination of the theoretical views of perfectionism, some of the instruments available to measure the construct, and the empirical evidence related to perfectionism in both the general and gifted populations. Areas of needed research are addressed. Particular emphasis is given to the multidimensional nature of the construct of perfectionism.

A rapid infusion regimen for lidocaine loading (150 mg infusion over 18 minutes following a 75 mg priming injection) was evaluated in 12 patients. This was compared with a multiple injection loading method in six patients involving three 50 mg injections over 18 minutes following the same priming dose. Both loading regimens were followed by a maintenance infusion of 2 mg/min. Predictably, the multiple injection method produced wide variations in lidocaine concentrations compared to the rapid infusion ...

In this introduction, we undertake a critical review of the state of research examining psychological contracts (PCs) as they pertain to the experience of expatriation and expatriates. Though expatriation as an activity has diversified greatly in recent decades – with the growth of self-initiated expatriation, more short-term, flexible and commuter assignments and a broadening of the expatriate profile with a wider range of people choosing to expatriate – there has been limited research published thus ...

Community resistance to urban consolidation has been the subject of much research. However, dialogue through social media between citizens and planning agencies is rarely captured and analysed. Using discourse analysis we explore the discourses employed by local government, a state planning agency, an independent expert panel, journalists and a self-organised community group to either support or oppose a proposed development. Due to the significant use of social media by the community group and ...

K-12 teachers in the United States are often discouraged from disclosing their political opinions in the classroom, and those that do are often accused of indoctrinating their students. In this essay, the author attempts to make a case for teacher political disclosure, specifically the “committed impartiality” stance described by Kelly (1986), based on the potential pedagogical and civic benefits of disclosure. In short, this essay argues that teacher political disclosure should not be associated ...

Research has shown an association between proactive adoption of environmental management practices and firm performance; however little of this research, particularly in the small firm context, has examined the impact of human resources management (HRM) practices on that association. Using data drawn from a sample of 158 small firms in the Australian machinery and equipment-manufacturing sector, this article contributes an empirical test of the moderating effect of HRM on the association between ...
