The assessment of trainees in health professions has changed dramatically in recent years. Virtually every field has moved from the simple testing of knowledge to an approach involving the assessment of competencies, and health service psychology is no exception. It is more than just a little ironic, then, that the field that prides itself on setting the standard for what constitutes adequate assessment has lagged so far behind other health professions in developing procedures for conducting these ...

Using archival data for a sample of U.S. presidents, evidence was found for a honeymoon and hangover effect in approval ratings over time. That is, presidential approval tended to be high early in the president's term and decrease over time. The effect of time on approval persisted even when military and economic indicators were included as predictors of presidential approval. More importantly, the effect of time on approval was moderated by charisma, such that charismatic leaders better maintained ...

The “perpetual challenge of infectious diseases” is no better exemplified than by the phenomena of rapid emergence and spread of bacterial resistance. Although β‐lactam antimicrobials have thus far been a mainstay of the therapeutic armamentarium for treatment of severe infections, their preeminent position has been challenged by an onslaught of resistance mechanisms in major nosocomial and community‐acquired pathogens, including modification of penicillin‐binding proteins, production of β‐lactamases, ...

The current studies examined how the Dark Triad personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) facilitate the strategic structuring of an individual's social environment in terms of same- and opposite-sex friends. In one study using normative questions ( N = 267) and another using a budget-allocation task ( N = 114), we found that the Dark Triad traits were associated with choosing friends for strategic purposes and to create a volatile environment. Narcissistic individuals reported ...

In endorsement and sponsorship research, the connection between athletes' performance and brand identification is sparse. In the USA, the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is sponsor-driven. While the old line in NASCAR was 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday', the hiring and firing of a driver is often steered by the driver's personality and ability to act in the role of product spokesman. This study uses a two-year sample of 1,000 US fans surveyed by telephone to test whether performance ...

John P. Conley, Myrna Wooders,
We discuss our experience in both commercial and open-access publishing. We argue that, in the papyrocentric (paper-centered) era before 1990, commercial publishers served a useful and necessary purpose. In the electronic era, post 2000, the academy has very little to gain from commercial publishers, who may actually impede rather than facilitate scholarly communication. We consider the costs of running an open-access journal and argue that they are considerably less than is commonly supposed. We ...

John B. Guerard, Harry M. Markowitz,
The purpose of this study is to document the existence, persistence, and effectiveness of publicly available variables linked to financial anomalies during the 1979–1999 time period with particular emphasis on earnings forecasts. It then tests whether these variables have held up through the 2003–2017 time period. We contend that educators and educational researchers working in P-12 urban schools should understand how federal urban policies contributed to the academic opportunity gap. To show how these federal polices still affect urban youth today, we provide demographic, housing, ...

Functional imaging has become a primary tool in the study of human psychology but is not without its detractors. Although cognitive neuroscientists have made great strides in understanding the neural instantiation of countless cognitive processes, commentators have sometimes argued that functional imaging provides little or no utility for psychologists. And indeed, myriad studies over the last quarter century have employed the technique of brain mapping-identifying the neural correlates of various ...
