To allow classification of bacteria previously reported as the SP group and the Stewart-Letscher group, 35 isolates from rodents (21), rabbits (eight), a dog and humans (five) were phenotypically and genotypically characterized. Comparison of partial rpoB sequences showed that 34 of the isolates were closely related, demonstrating at least 97.4 % similarity. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison of 20 selected isolates confirmed the monophyly of the SP group and revealed 98.5 %-100 % similarity between isolates. ...

Principles and guidelines are presented to ensure a solid scientific standard of papers dealing with the taxonomy of taxa of Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 . The classification of the Pasteurellaceae is in principle based on a polyphasic approach. DNA sequencing of certain genes is very important for defining the borders of a taxon. However, the characteristics that are common to all members of the taxon and which might be helpful for separating it from related taxa must also be identified. Descriptions ...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which comprises the phenotypes of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is often associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, currently, no approved therapy exists for PH-COPD. Signalling of the nitric oxide (NO)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) axis plays an important role in PH and COPD.We investigated the treatment effect of riociguat, which promotes the NO-cGMP pathway, in the mouse model of smoke-induced PH and emphysema in a curative approach, ...

From 1990 to 2000, the number of published named taxa based upon new isolates at species and genus levels in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, formerly International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, have increased by approximately four- and sevenfold, respectively. New taxa based upon characterization of only a single isolate remained at around 40% for both categories. The Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision) has no recommendations on the number of strains required ...

Combined-modality treatment consisting of chemotherapy and consolidation radiotherapy is standard of care for patients with early-stage unfavourable Hodgkin lymphoma. However, the use of radiotherapy can have long-term sequelae, which is of particular concern, as Hodgkin lymphoma is frequently diagnosed in young adults with a median age of approximately 30 years. In the German Hodgkin Study Group HD17 trial, we investigated whether radiotherapy can be omitted without loss of efficacy in patients ...

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high mortality. Lung-protective ventilation is current standard of care in patients with ARDS, but it might lead to hypercapnia, which is independently associated with worse outcomes. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) has been proposed as an adjuvant therapy to avoid progression of clinical severity and limit further ventilator-induced lung injury but its use in COVID-19 has not ...

Abstract A series of azulenes derived from diethyl azulene-1,3-dicarboxylate (1) as the parent compound and featuring a systematic addition of polar substituents (Cl, Br, OH and NH2) both in the positions 2 and 6 of the azulene (2–6) were prepared and investigated with reference to their X-ray crystal structures, having occurrence and modes of π⋯π stacking of the azulene units particularly in view. Except the parent compound 1, all the other derivatives show typical π-stacked dimers in the crystal ...

A new matrix‐matched reference material has been developed – NFHS‐2‐NP (NIOZ Foraminifera House Standard‐2‐Nano‐Pellet) – with element mass fractions, and isotope ratios resembling that of natural foraminiferal calcium carbonate. A 180–355 µm size fraction of planktic foraminifera was milled to nano‐particles and pressed to pellets. We report reference and information values for mass fractions of forty‐six elements measured by six laboratories as well as for 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (three laboratories), δ 13 C, ...

PURPOSE Combined-modality treatment (CMT) with 2× ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) and small-field radiotherapy is standard of care for patients with early-stage favorable Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). However, the role of radiotherapy has been challenged. Positron emission tomography (PET) after 2× ABVD (PET-2) might help to predict individual outcomes and guide treatment. METHODS Between November 2009 and December 2015, we recruited patients age 18 to 75 years with newly diagnosed, ...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease with an inflammatory phenotype with increasing prevalence in the elderly. Expanded population of mutant blood cells carrying somatic mutations is termed clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP). The association between CHIP and COPD and its relevant effects on DNA methylation in aging are mainly unknown. Analyzing the deep-targeted amplicon sequencing from 125 COPD patients, we found enhanced incidence of CHIP mutations (~20%) with ...

Aspiration of stomach content or saliva in critical conditions-e.g., shock, intoxication, or resuscitation-can lead to acute lung injury. While various biomarkers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids have been studied for diagnosing aspiration, none have been conclusively established as early indicators of lung damage. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of pepsin, bile acid, and other biomarkers for detecting aspiration in an intensive care unit (ICU).In this study, 50 ICU patients were ...
