The Japanese SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics, SPICA, aims to provide astronomers with a truly new window on the universe. With a large -3 meter class- cold -6K- telescope, the mission provides a unique low background environment optimally suited for highly sensitive instruments limited only by the cosmic background itself. SAFARI, the SpicA FAR infrared Instrument SAFARI, is a Fourier Transform imaging spectrometer designed to fully exploit this extremely low far infrared background ...

Youth with cerebral palsy (CP) face significant barriers to participation in physical activity (PA). There is little information available about the nature of these barriers. Seventeen (17) youth and/or their parents participated in focus groups and individual interviews to identify factors that make it easy or hard to be physically active. Four themes emerged across functional levels: environmental and personal factors, limitations related to impairment in body structure and function, the perception ...

Abstract The arthroscopically implantable force probe transducer, which measures the effects of local ligament fiber tension, was inserted into the anteromedial band of the anterior cruciate ligament after measurements with the differential variable reluctance transducer were completed in Part I of this study. The overall goals in Part II remained the same, with additional experiments included to determine the sensitivity of output voltage from the transducer to medial‐lateral placement of the device ...

Abstract The goals of this study were to (a) evaluate the differential variable reluctance transducer as an instrument for measuring tissue strain in the anteromedial band of the anterior crudciate ligament, (b) develop a series of calibration curves (for simple states of knee loading) from which resultant force in the ligament could be estimated from measured strain levels in the anteromedial band of the ligament, and (c) study the effects of knee flexion angle and mode of applied loading on ouput ...

The stability constant for the palladium complex formation at 25°C was found to be (2.04 ± 0.26) × 104 dm3 mol–1 and (2.30 ± 0.19) × 104 dm3 mol–1 with ΔfH = 8 ± 1 kJ mol–1, ΔfSθ = 108 ± 10 J K–1 mol–1, and ΔfH = ...

We evaluated the long-term outcome of isolated endoscopically-assisted posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in 26 patients using hamstring tendon autografts after failure of conservative management. At ten years after surgery the mean International Knee Documentation Committee subjective knee score was 87 (SD 14) of a possible 100 points. Regular participation in moderate to strenuous activities was possible for only seven patients pre-operatively; this increased to 23 patients post-operatively. ...

Frailty, which has been conceptualized as a state of decreased physiologic reserve contributing to functional decline, has a prevalence among older African Americans that is twice that in older whites. This study assesses the independent contribution of race to frailty. We evaluated 786 African-American and 4491 white participants of the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS). Frailty is defined as meeting three or more of five criteria derived from CHS measures: lowest quintile for grip strength, self- ...

ABSTRACT The 3A protein of the coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), an enterovirus that belongs to the family of the picornaviruses, inhibits endoplasmic reticulum-to-Golgi transport. Recently, we elucidated the underlying mechanism by showing that CVB3 3A interferes with ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (Arf1)-dependent COP-I recruitment to membranes by binding and inhibiting the function of GBF1, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that is required for the activation of Arf1 (E. Many viruses modify cellular processes for their own benefit. The enterovirus 3A protein inhibits endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-to-Golgi transport, a function previously suggested to be important for viral suppression of immune responses. Here, we show that a virus carrying a 3A protein defective in inhibiting ER-to-Golgi transport is indeed less virulent in mice, and we unravel the mechanism by which 3A inhibits this trafficking step. Evidence is provided that 3A inhibits the activation of the GTPase ...
